SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE
Forty-five years of experience in teaching writing at five universities, from freshman composition to graduate writing workshops. Twenty-five years of experience on editorial boards of scholarly journals in the U.S. and Europe. Consultant on manuscripts for textbook and scholarly publishing houses. Author and editor of eighteen books, more than 100 articles, and several hundred book reviews on modern English and American fiction, biography, and criticism. Two books and a half-dozen articles of creative nonfiction, journalism in national magazines and newspapers, about three dozen poems and several works of fiction.

to present · Conducted interviews and did formal research on the economic and cultural aspects
of writing in Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Romania.

· Taught courses from freshman Honors through advanced research seminars and
creative writing workshops, emphasizing research, organizational, and editing skills.
· Published numerous books, articles, reviews, essays, poems, etc.
· Served as associate editor of Genre, evaluating 40-50 articles per year, and as editorial board member of three other journals in the U.S. and in Europe.
· Served as outside consultant on book and article manuscripts.
· Served as assistant dean of the Graduate College, evaluating transcripts, writing and
editing regulations and catalogue material, chairing committees responsible for
establishing policy for membership in graduate faculty, language proficiency for
international students, and admissions and dismissals.
· Served as president of the Western American Literature Association and host of the
annual convention.

· Received first book contract, continued to publish articles and reviews.

· Taught freshman and sophomore writing and literature classes, emphasizing writing
and analytical skills.

1955-1962 Graduate teaching assistant, University of Kansas, University of Wisconsin
· Taught freshman and sophomore classes in composition, emphasizing grammar,
outlining, organization, revision.
· Developed research and writing skills in graduate program.
1955 Reporter and photographer, Great Bend (Kansas) Daily Tribune
· Wrote and edited news, sports, and feature stories and served as photographer.
