Those Were the Days...
A Happy Days Retrospective by Atomic Robot

Happy Days is probably one the world's most beloved sitcoms about American teenagers in the 1950's and 1960's, falling just behind such other classics as, "My Three Sons," "That's My Boy," "Rooney Jones and the T-Bird Kids," "The Dudley Family," and "The New Adventures of Stinky Pete."

THE HAPPY DAYS GANG

The series was originally set in late-1950's Millwauke, Wisconsin, and focused on the Cunningham family. The family consisted of Parents Howard(Tom Bosley) and Marion(Marion Ross), pre-teen daughter Joanie(Erin Moran), and college-going son Chuck(various actors), and featured the Cunninghams' wholesome, All-American teenage son, Richie(former child star and current film director Ron Howard).

Other characters on the show included Richie's pals Warren "Potsie" Weber(Anson Williams), Ralph "The Mouth" Malph(Donny Most), and restaraunt owner Arnold(Pat Morita). Possibly the most controversial, yet also popular, character on the show was Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli(Henry Winkler).

Especially impressive about the Fonz was his trademark symbol of coolness -- sticking his thumb in the air and saying "Ayyy!" Why that was cool, I really don't know, but in the universe of Happy Days, it was the absolute apex of hipster achievement, which none of the other kids were capable of doing, no matter how hard they tried.

The Fonz, while holding most high school boys in contempt, took a strange liking to nerd-like Richie. It was the unusual friendship that developed between these two contrasting personalities that formed the dramatic heart of this series. Continue reading about Happy Days...
