Yugi Moto
He's a freshman in high school who is really good at Duel Monsters.  His grandfather owns a card shop and is an expert at constructing decks and playing cards.  After Yugi's grandfather is captured by Pegasus, Yugi sets off to the Duelist Kingdom for the chance to face Pegasus in a duel and get his grandpa back.  Yugi is by far the most innocent character on the show.  He is a little unsure of himself at times, but he is usually very brave and sticks up for his friends no matter what.  Even though Pegasus took his Grandfather, Yugi doesn't ever show any hard feelings or anger toward him.

Yami Yugi
This is Yugi Moto's alter ego.  He is the spirit of the millennium puzzle.  He guides Yugi through all his duels.  Unlike Yugi, Yami Yugi is extremely confident.  He always seems sure that he will win the game and he plays very precisely.  Yami Yugi shows a lot more dislike for Pegasus than Yugi does, starting in the second episode.  Yugi and Yami Yugi may seen very different on the outside, but they have a few things in common.  They are both brave, honest, and willing to help out their friends when they need help.

Maximillian Pegasus
For starters, this guy has got some serious problems.  The big white mullet has got to go, and the red suit is less than attractive.  But that isn't the only problem.  He is really strange.  The two things he says the most are Kaiba-boy and Yugi-boy, and he does it in this soft, gentle voice.  It makes you wonder about him.   Joey describes Pegasus perfectly, "He's a grade A nutcase."

Joey Wheeler
Joey isn't the smartest of the group, but he's still ok. Compared to the other character in the show, Joey is pretty normal.  He is competing in the tournament in order to win the money for his sister's operation to restore her eyesight.  He has a tendency to get into a lot of fights, but it's often for a good reason.  He doesn't seen to like Mai too much, but he still tried to fight Panic because Panic pushed her.  He isn't very confident in his skills as a duelist, but he gets better as time goes on.
