Thrust is the amout of power a rocket engine uses to push the rocket.  It works when something(either a liquid or matter) is pushed out the back of the rocket or the engine.  The speed you go at is by how much matter is leaving the engine at what speed.

In this picture, you can see that there are 2 ways to do the same trust. the first way would be using alot of propellant at a low speed or not alot of propelent at a fast speed.
