Title: Ninja Scroll

Genre: Historical/Fantasy

Creator/Studio: Yoshiaki Kawajiri/Madhouse

Company: Manga

DVD Info: 1 hour, 30 min

Summary: Set in Japan's Edo Period (1603-1867), this anime follows the adventures of lone swordsman Jubei Higami, who is battling the evil Shogun of the Dark and his henchmen, the Seven Devils of Kimon. Accompanying him are a secretive monk named Dakuan and a woman named Kagero, who is the sole surivor of her ninja village.

The Good: This story is chock full of action. If you can stomach the violence, you can get a good story. Jubei's a great hero.

The Bad: It requires quite a lot of grains of salt. Sorry, fellow otakus, but I can't defend this trash. Give me something easier, please.

Offensive Material: There's so much blood you'll need an umbrella. Kagero is raped at one point. There's also another sex scene later on. We also see a Buddhist woman praying. All of the villains can perform dark magic. Reincarnation is mentioned in throw-away lines.

Overall: DO NOT let young children watch this. It is almost unentertaining, especially for those with weak constitutions for violence.

My rating: 1.5 Category: D

Note: Ninja Scroll is also a TV series from Urban Vision. Although Manga video would like you to believe otherwise, Ninja Resurrection has nothing to do with this. Yoshiaki Kawajiri also directed Vampire Hunter D and the Animatrix episode "Program". Other Madhouse titles include: Gungrave, Cardcaptors, Millennium Actress, Paranoia Agent, Gunslinger Girland Boogiepop Phantom.A 10th anniversary Special Edition is also available.
