Genre: Sci-fi
Creator/Studio: Bones
Company: ADV
DVD Info: 26 episodes, 7 volumes
Summary: Ayato Kamine has turned 17 years old and has discovered he's been living an elaborate lie. His world, Tokyo Jupiter, was created by a mysterious alien force called Mu. The reality is that it's really a barrier to the only human civilization on Earth. He and a mysterious girl named Reika Mishima discover a mechanical deity called RahXephon. What is his connection to all this? Why has he been chosen to pilot Rahxephon?
The Good: The animation has a look similar to that seen in oil paintings. The colors are vivid. The story has similarities to The Matrix and Neon Genesis Evangelion, but has a different, more spiritual feel from them, unusual for robot-based anime.
The Bad: Because it involves parallel worlds, the story gets quite confusing. Many characters have different relationships in both worlds.
Offensive Material: Some violence and silohouette-styled nudity. Also, the anime uses symbolism borrowed from Buddhism and ancient mythologies.
Overall: This is one of Bones' best titles. I love the similarities between this and The Matrix. I also like how the show seems more optimistic and hopeful than most robot-themed anime. I highly recommend this.
My Review: 3.5 Category: C
Comment: Other Bones titles include Cowboy Bebop, Eureka 7, Fullmetal Alchemist, Mars Daybreak, Scrapped Princess and Wolf's Rain. Viz publishes the manga version. There's also a movie from ADV, but it's little more than recycled footage from the original series.
