Title: R.O.D. the TV (a.k.a. Read or Die: the TV Series)
Genre: Fantasy
Creator: Hideyuki Kurata/Studio Deen
Company: Geneon
DVD Info: 26 episodes, 7 volumes
Summary: When a movie company wants to make a movie out of her first book, author Nenene Surigawa starts getting death threats. This prompts her editor (and boyfriend) Lee to hire the Paper SIsters as her bodyguards. The Paper Sisters are Michelle, Maggie, and Anita. They each have psychic control over paper (think flying around on paper birds or using paper bows and arrows). But why are people after Surigawa?
The Good: Despite its strange concept, the show actually works. I also like the fact that even though it's a sequel to Read or Die OVA, you don't need to have seen the original series in order to understand it.
The Bad: Not much, except that it's hard to describe.
Offensive Material: Mild violence and usage of magic. The opening theme's animation has nude silhouettes (like in Charlie's Angels or James Bond movies)
Overall: Despite the strange concept, I like this series. It's unique and has a great sense of humor (like how Michelle is so obsessed with books that she even wants to buy a bookstore's entire inventory!)
My Review: 4.0 Category: B (Borderline)
Note: ROD the TV is a sequel to the Read or Die OVA. Hideyuki Kurata also created Excel Saga. He was also the head writer for Battle Athletes, Battle Atheletes Victory and the Brigadoon anime. JC Staff's credits include: Revolutionary Girl Utena, the Slayers franchise, and Excel Saga.
