Mouse in a Glass

What is Rodent Rescue?

Rodent Rescue is a organisation which is involved in the rescue of rats and mice. Our main goal is to place these animals in good, caring homes. The Rodent Rescue has been running this service since January 1999. We expected only a small number of animals, say 10, when we started this service. In fact in 1999, we rescued and placed some 40 animals. For this reason we are always desperate for people to supply good homes and to act as temporary carers while animals are waiting to be placed.

Please consider a rescue rat or mouse before you get a pet from elsewhere!

The rescue service takes animals surrendered by individuals, and to animal welfare organisations. We do not take excess stock or unplanned litters. However, we will gladly give advice and help you advertise these animals.

Surrendered animals are dropped off at a carer's home. An assessment is made of the animal’s condition. Any animals requiring veterinary assistance, receive such treatment and are left with a carer who can monitor the animal’s progress. Animals that are in good condition are monitored for a few days so that the temperament can be assessed and then placed on an "adoption" list. Adoptees are advertised on the webpage, in the NSWFRMC magazine and are taken to NSWFRMC shows and displays to find owners.

Animal which are up for adoption are free to good homes. If owners experience any problems the animal can be returned or advice can be sought from Rodent Rescue carer's.

How can you help? If you would like to act as a rescuer, temporary home, intensive care unit or would like to offer a permanent home to these animals, please let us know. We do request that rescuers have spare cages to temporarily house animals. Both the rescuers and temporary homes must have a knowledge of rats and mice and also be able to recognise parasitic infestations, broken bones, malnutrition, etc. People interested in intensive care should have a basic knowledge of animal nursing, hygiene and sterilisation principals and be able to administer medications. You must also have an area where these animals do not come into contact with any of your own mice and rats (to reduce the chances of cross infection). It is essential that you have had a tetanus injection for your own protection. Unfortunately, at present, Rodent Rescue only works in the Sydney/Central Coast area of Australia so carer's will need to live in these areas.

When dealing with individuals and animal welfare organisations, it must be remembered that you are acting as a representative of the Club and, as such, should not do or say anything that will bring the Club into disrepute.

We are slowly gaining some funds but these funds are being retained for veterinary bills, so any food expenses will have to be largely borne by you.

I f you feel you are not up to the task of any of the above positions, you can still help. The rescue service would greatly appreciate any funds, consumables (such as litter, towels, bedding, toys, and food), and equipment (heat mats, cages). If you can help in any way, please contact us.

If you have any suggestions for the service, we would like to hear from you.
