Ordinances of The Company of the Grail |
I - When they represent the Company in the lists, companions will equip themselves so that from ten feet away they look like fully equipped men-at-arms of the years 1300-1485. The entire harness must be from a single period within that range. Equipment fully covered by Surcoats, Jupons, and Coat-Armor need only meet Society safety standards, provided that the covering garment is appropriate to the rest of the harness, and authentic in appearance, and the dubious harness is entirely covered and does not impart an inauthentic outline to the covering garment. More authentic equipment is encouraged. During most of this period, a complete harness for a man-at-arms included greaves. They need not be closed greaves. Late 15th century harness without greaves will be accepted on a case-by-case basis when supported by documentation. Sabatons are splendid, medieval shoes are acceptable. Hose is recommended. For safety reasons, mitten gauntlets and basket hilts are acceptable. Barred visors are acceptable on great bascinets. Barred visors are acceptable on ordinary bascinets, but somewhat discouraged. II - When Full Companions of the Company are attending our tournaments but not wearing armor, they are expected to wear clothing appropriate to 1300-1485 that meets the "ten foot rule" described in ordinance I. III -Companions of the Company shall be chosen from those who love well noble deeds of arms. The petitioner must be agreeable to no less than two thirds of the Company, and swear to uphold the rules, purposes, and ordinances of the said Company. IV - All marshal companions shall display their arms upon shield and banner. All non-marshal companions shall display their arms on banners when able. V -The Company may accept poor gentlemen, who can array themselves honestly according to their rank, but have not the harness to meet the ten-foot-rule outlined in Ordinance I. And these Associate companions may attend the deeds of arms, feasts, and festivals of the Company, although they may not take the field as Full Companions of the Company. Notwithstanding, so they may not lose their knowledge of the profession of arms, they may take the field in their own person, so long as they do not act so as to bring reproach upon the Company. VI - Companions of the Company shall ever behave in the field with valor and courtesy, and with such chivalry that they shall bring honor to the Company. |
