South Australia is unique in that it is the only state settled by free migrants rather than convicts. During the 1800's they came from England and Ireland to the new colony in search of a better life. In late 1836 the first 170 settlers arrived in South Australia. My first ancestors arrived just 3 years later.

Usually settlers landed at Port Adelaide or Glenelg and settled in Adelaide. From here many moved into the country to gain employment in mining and agriculture.
