In the summer of 1997 I had the immense shock of hearing my boyfriend walk through the door with the news that he'd just met Roger Taylor in the street, in Birmingham! After my initial hysteria, I calmly listened to the stunning news that Roger was in a new band called 'Freebass' working in Birmingham & looked the same as ever! (A great exclusive for our first issue of PG!) For the next few weeks I tried to find out as much as I could about Rogers new venture..
After a few uninspiring telephone calls I finally got lucky & located Rogers new manager. I found out as much information as possible & eventually contacted his new record company – imagine my delight when I received a CD & 10" of Rog's new stuff! The single 'Love is like Oxygen' (an old 'Sweet' song) was due for a November release but unfortunately it never surfaced. This was due to a lack of radio play in the UK. The next idea was to release the single in the New Year re-recorded along with a promotional video, which would feature Roger. Unfortunately before this happened the band split up, Roger continuing to record material in London with Jake Udo. The CD & the single contained three mixes of 'Love is like Oxygen' & another track entitled 'Softunderfoot' The style combined German techno with Drum & Bass. In their short history Freebass played a few live shows in Birmingham & also planned to release an album, which leads us to think there are more Freebass tunes out there to be discovered.
