Scientific Pursuits of Rohan H. Wickramasinghe
Rohan H. Wickramasinghe, founder of the Institute for Tropical Environmental Studies (a non-governmental non-profit entity), was born in Sri Lanka (at that time Ceylon) where he continues to reside. He has spent some 18 years abroad and experienced visiting over 30 countries (including studies, work, conferences and vacationing). His first visit to Europe (with his parents) was for six months in 1946, which gave him the opportunity of enjoying travel abroad with few of the formalities and hassles one experiences today. This, also, gave him his first opportunity of visiting Cambridge University, where his father, Reginald Hugh Wickramasinghe, and an uncle had been Wranglers in the Maths Tripos and where he himself was to study later. (Please see his Curriculum Vitae at http://www.oocities.org/rohan_wickramasinghe/serendib.html for further details.)

His scientific work has taken him to universities, industry, government, high school teaching and consultancy assignments. One advantage of working in research and in a Third World country has been the wide variety of subjects he is exposed to. For instance, in Sri Lanka he has been able to indulge his interest in the indigenous orchids of the country while studying its highly fascinating stock market! He has, also, served for a spell as Environmental and Landscaping Consultant to a governmental body concerned with Sri Lanka's (Archaeological and) Cultural Sites. (Please see his Curriculum Vitae and Lists of Publications at http://www.oocities.org/rohan_wickramasinghe/taproban.html and http://www.oocities.org/rohan_wickramasinghe/ceilao.html for more information.) His most recent activity has been learning about Web Designing to help him construct this page.
