Physical Description: Petite, Elina stands a slight 4’2” and looks more 10 than 13. She’s tanned and lean from her days running about outside and helping her family with their trade. She’s starting to get faint signs of puberty, but still has very much the physique of a young girl.
Personality: The most striking thing about Elina are her watchful eyes which are constantly alert and taking notice of her surroundings. She’s an odd combination of head-strong and shy: confident and cheerful around those she knows and is comfortable with but skittish and wary in new situations. She’s mute but her face and eyes are very expressive of her emotions. She can get frustrated when not understood but otherwise has an aimiable, even-tempered personality.Very focused on doing well in whatever she sets out to do.

Dislikes: being in darkness since she needs to see to ‘hear’, being teased or misunderstood, being too far from water

Brief History: Elina was born deaf to a loving fisherfolk family already filled by three lively boys. Though their only daughter and youngest child’s ‘imperfection’ was a blow to her parents, they took it in stride. Her mother Tansy, being a particularly formidable woman, spent many hours each day with her daughter to teach her to read lips and learn about sound. It took a long time and patient encouragement from her family, but she quickly became an adept lip-reader and developed a system of signs they could understand. Once she learned to read and write, she was able to communicate almost like a regular girl. She was well-loved and protected by her three older brothers whom she adored and under their ‘wings’ she grew quickly and gained friends among her peers.
She was certain she’d grow up to help Mamma and Papa and her brothers in the fishing trade, but just after her 13th birthday woke up to find her eyes no longer blue but an odd honey-gold colour. She always loved the water but she suddenly couldn’t get enough of it and behaved rather oddly. All in all, it was clear she was meant to be a Water Mage. Though sad at the though of her departure, her parents were so proud of her, and as soon as they got the expected letter, the whole family dressed in their finest clothes (simple but crisply clean) and accompanied her to the capital to see her off to her new life. Elina is both excited and terrified at the prospect, but is determined to make her beloved family proud and become a good mage.
