These birds are a pure pleasure to watch as the gradual transformation into adulthood takes place. A second year breeder male Impeyan achieves full color by the second season. They are easily sexed at about six months by checking the throat area and tail feathers, depending on conditions of care. The width of the black band across the tail feather markings should show up by the time they are six months old as shown below. You would notice gradual changes in the throat area of the male, where black feathers would be coming in while the hen would always carry the white band on her throat throughout her lifetime. The male is always larger in size, heavier legged with short spurs and a larger skull. The chicks do well with plenty of greens and mealworms. Also a must is for the chicks to be raised either on the ground in dry conditions or on wire. If you choose the latter a dust bath needs to be provided. Place cursor over photo(s) for caption. |
