Wiggins Family, mainly of New York

under construction, much thanks to my Dad; Arthur Croft, his sisters; Aunt Dot and Peg and others listed next to their family line for proof-reading and supplying historical data. I couldn't do it without you.

Migration: England > Reading, MA > Jamaica, NY > onto various parts of NY then my member migrated to Adrian, MI and some of his decendants to NE.

Note: This line is not to be confused with a Thomas Wiggins who married Sarah Barefoot in MA; that line moved to NH while this line moved to Long Island, NY.

note: for mine and your research this info on Orange/Utica, Co: the following from Glenn Marshall - New Windsor Town Historian: Until 1798 Newburgh, New Windsor, Little Britain were all part of Ulster County, with New Windsor & (hamlet Little Britain) being the southernmost town in Ulster County. In 1798 upon the reorganization of the county's Rockland was created thus ending this area's association with Ulster County. The original country line was Murderers Creek which is in New Windsor however this too confuses search issues since a portion was actually in both county's. From the book: History of Orange County by Samuel W. Eager 1847, it lists the town of Newburgh and New Windsor, up to 1763 was known as the Precinct of the Highlands, by virtue of the law, it was ordered to be divided into two (in 1763) one called the Precinct of Newburgh, the other the Precinct of New Windsor.

I separate out my line so that I can write out their family history

Thomas Wiggins was born in Battersea, Surry Co., England and immigrated in 1635 to MA. The Creed family line states that his father's name was Benjamin; I haven't found this, yet. Thomas lived in Reading, MA and moved to Jamaica, Long Island, NY in 1656, (with Sarath or if she died is unknown) he marries Joanna in NY as there is no record in MA. He died 1691 in Jamaica, Long Island, NY,. His descendants spread out from Jamaica to Flushing and by 1700's to Hempstead, all Long Island from 1656 to 1750. By 1733 Benjamin, Jr. moved to Newburgh, Ulster Co. NY and his descendant to Western, Oneida Co. and Wyoming Co. John's children were born in Orange & Saratoga Co. and they all end up living in Rome, Malta, Phelps, Western and Perry in Saratoga, Oneida, Ontario & Wyoming Co. Anning lived in Western, Rome and Floyd and his son Annin lived in Floyd, Ny (near Rome, NY) 1833 until 1840/41 then moved to Warsaw, Wyoming Co., NY where they lived for the next 50 years. Most of Annin's children stay near Warsaw, tho one went to R.I., one to MO, one to MI. From the MI member, decendents moved into IL, NE and OK.

Anning Wiggins was born 4-02-1767 at Newburgh, NY and died 8-09-1851 in Rome, NY, buried Rome Cemetery. On 12-02-1790 he married Catherine Woodworth in Stillwater, Saratoga Co, NY where their first 5 children are born. In 1798 (according to Rial's bio.) they move to Western, Oneida Co., NY (where his brother, Jacob, moved in 1795) and are in 1820 Western census, sometime after 1833 (Anning is witness to a James Keech 1833 Will as inhabitant of Western) they move to Rome. Anning's own Will has 2 witnesses who knew him in Rome 13 years before his death which is 1838, so they move to Rome between 1833-38). Anning served in the American Revolutionary War even tho he was about 14 and both are buried at Wright Settlement Cemetery near Floyd, NY. Anning appears in the D.A.R. Patriot's Index, Vol. 1, p. 742, as Anon WIGGINS and in the book New York in the Revolution, by Berthold Fernow, 1887 reprinted in 1972 by Polyanthos. P. 515 - Roster of State Troops - served in Johnson's Regiment, Roosa's Company, as a Private.

Catherine was born 2-29-1772 at Saratoga Co., NY and died at Floyd, NY, 3-25-1847. Catherine Woodworth's father was Amos Woodworth, born 5-04-1741 in Salisbury, CT, died 4-12-1812 in Florence, NY. and also served in the American Revolutionary War. Her mother was Eunice NEWLAND, birthplace unknown but died 2-12-1820 in Florence, NY, they were married 4-12-1764. Catherine was granddaughter of Caleb Woodworth (f. Benjamin Woodworth, mo. Hannah DAMON) who was b. either 5-22-1701 in Little Compton, R.I., or 5-22-1704 in Lebanon, New London, CT (ancestry.com listing) and d. 4-22-1775 or 30 May 1780 (ancestry.com listing) at Salisbury, CT. Caleb m. 2-27-1727 in Lebanon, CT Jane MUNGER, b. 2-27-1705, d. 1-24-1774 in Salisbury, CT.
Note:The source for birth dates is from the Rev. War widows pension file (W-21343) of Anna SICKLES-HOLMES (Thomas), whom I'm not sure how she connects. She was born 19 days after Anning so she isn't a sister...cousin maybe? Family Bibles were often used to prove relations so women would tear out the page listing relations and those were made permanent part of record. Her Bible listed this couple and their children's births. I have a copy of his Will.

Anning Wiggins, Jr. family was living in Western, Oneida Co., NY when he was born 10-09-1805 and LaGrange, Wyoming Co., NY when he died 1-13-1892. On 5-02-1833 in Fairfield, Herkimer Co., NY (S.E. of Rome) he married, Sarah Tennant, (f. John Tennant, mo. Sarah DAWLEY) whose family was from North Kingston, Washingington Co., R.I., she was born 10-06-1807 in Warwick, RI), d.2-09-1892 in LaGrange, NY., both are buried at Perry Center Cemetery, NY. Per the places of birth of their children and his 1881 Will, they lived in Floyd, Ny (near Rome, NY) 1833 until January 1840 then moved to Warsaw, Wyoming Co., NY where they lived for the next 50 years (Wyoming became a Co. in 1841). Annin would buy 58 acres of lot's 7 & 8 of twsp. 9 Jan. 1840, over then next 18 years buying a total of 165 acres at this same place. A record I found on ancestry.com stated that all the children were married in Ridgeway, Orleans Co., NY which is near Rochester, NY. Sarah and one of her sisters eventually live in R.I. Source for info. Some info below was from Wm. H. Wiggins great-granddaughter, Lucille Bigelow, (which she got from 1850 NY census) in a 1965 letter to my grandmother. Per The Perry Herald Newspaper, Sarah was ill when Annin died, she died 4 weeks later. In 1880 census Annin is retired and Emma is living at home. The following was written about Annin dtd. 1-14-1892: "Annin Wiggins dies at his home in this place on Wednesday, the 13th last., after a short illness which confined him in the home but a few days ago. Mr. Wiggins though 88 years of age, was an exceptionally industrious man and was never contented unless employed in some active labor, even up to the last hour in which he was able to be alive". There is no Will on file for Sarah.

____7. Frances Emily "Emma" Wiggins, b. 10-27-1852 (Warsaw, Wyoming, NY), d. 12-05-1932 (Warsaw, Wyoming, NY), never married, lives with widower brother, Wm. in 1900 Adrian, MI census.

Wm. H. Wiggins was b. 4-08-1839, Floyd, NY, d. 3-06-1912, in Adrian, MI and buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Adrian, MI along with wives Sarah and Clarissa. He attended one term at Middlebury Academy and left home by the time he was working age. noteMiddlebury Academy, chartered in 1819 and the only school of its type east of the Genesee River in NYS, was a school of higher education; comparable to what a college-type education would be today. In 1861 he moved to Washtenaw Co, MI. and peddled medicine 6 months before renting 320 acres near Manchester and farming. On 1-03-1865 he married Ellen Shipman (f. Stephen Shipman, mo. Mary ?) at her home in Warsaw, NY (according to Portrait and Biographical Album of Lenawee County, Michigan; page 1069, published in Chicago by the Chapman Brothers in 1888) and bought a 60 acre farm near Bridgewater twp. sometime that year. Knap and Bonner book, p. 411, states death from complications of childbirth of Wm. Wiggins (he would grow up to become a Dr.). Died in Manchester but listed in Warsaw Cemetery, Warsaw, NY: WIGGINS, Ellen M. (Shipman) 9 Nov 1870 Age 30y 11m; dau. of Stephen & Mary Shipman; wife of William Wiggins
. In 1873, after Ellen died and he remarried to Clarrisa, sold this farm, moving to Adrian, Lenawee Co, MI and bought Judge Beaman's farm. In 1874 he was elected twp. clerk and served until 1890 when elected county treasurer. 1884 he won democratic legislature ticket. At sometime after 1890 he sold Adrian farm and bought the Cheselton Baker farm on section 9 in Madison; lived there until 1903 then retired from farming; living in Section 10 of same area and later moved to Wheeler St in Madison then to his daughter, Mary's home. I think this line moved to MI because John / Hannah Wiggins grandson, Casey Wiggins, (20 yrs older than Wm)moved to Livingston Co. where he died in 1896. There is another Wm. Wiggins, son of Samuel Wiggins, (speculated grandson / son (respectively ) of John wiggins) who moved to Riga, MI in 1853. Another reason for the moves from NY? In 1900 Adrian census (p.107) Wm has lost 3 wives and is living with children LaVerna, Milford, Harriet and sister, Emma and he is listed as renting his farm.
