MADDOX FAMILY HISTORY
Addison Hewitt Maddox was born December 28, 1830 in Higland County, Ohio.
In March, 1847, when about 16 years of age, he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, Cincinnati Conference, under the administration of Philip Nation, on Highland Circuit, at Boston, Dallas P.O., Highland County, Ohio, and remained in that faith and communion until his death. He filled different positions in the church namely trustee, class leader, assistant superintendent and superintendent of Sunday school at various times. He was never very demonstrative, but always ready to and did acknowledge his faith in Jesus Christ and God as his father and enjoyed that peace of mind which the world cannot give.

He was a saddle and harness maker in all its branches and conducted the business with his father at Boston, Dallas P.O., Highland County, Ohio, up to and during the Civil War. In October, 1861, he enlisted in the 60th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry which was recruited for one year, and was assigned to Company F, Capt. Cowgill, as a musician, fifer, and served with his regiment, except for two months when he was in hospital for disability. He was surrendered with his regiment a prisoner of war at Harpers Ferry in September, 1862, and paroled and sent to Chicago, Illinois, where he was honorably discharged with his regiment in November, 1862, by expiration of term of service.

In July, 1863, he enlisted in Co. A, 2nd Battalion Ohio Cavalry, National Guards, as saddler to serve five years at the end of which time he was honorably discharged.
He went out with the State Guard in the "Morgan Raid" and was at the battle of Buffingtons Island on the Ohio river where John Morgan was defeated and his army scattered by the Union forces under Maj. Gen. Hobson. In August, 1864, he went with his Co. to Todd's Barracks, Columbus, Ohio, to serve 60 days as guards. Our duties there were to accompany as guards recruits to the front. He was with Capt. Haskel with 100 men to General Sherman's army while he was fighting at Atlanta, Georgia. He was there about 3 or 4 days before Atlanta fell. After being discharged from that service, we had been sworn into the United States service for 60 days,

He located in Hillsboro, Ohio, where in December, 1864, with his brother Henry H. Maddox, he opened a saddle and harness store and shop, in which he continued for eight years, at which time his health failing, he sold out to his brother and went to Cincinnati, Ohio, to travel for Julius J. Bantlin in the saddlers hardware business. He worked as traveling salesman most of the time for twenty-five years except a few years he lived on his farm, though then he was agent for the Champion Iron Fence Company of Kenton, Ohio, and traveled part of the time.

He took the several degrees of Masonry in Blue Lodge in 1856; Royal Arch Chapter in 1865 and 1866; and Commandery in 1877.

Addison H. Maddox remained in Hillsboro until 1890 when he removed to Delaware, Ohio, and to Tecumseh, Michigan In 1899 and to Keystone, Indiana in 1906. He bought property in Montpelier, Indiana in conjunction with his sister-in-law, Mrs. Augusta (Hedrick) Roberts, and moved there on the 13th day of May, 1913."
