Gabriel Mattox and Mary Mitchell had the following children: 1) Samuel Gabriel Mattox- born March 23, 1804 in Franklin County, Virginia. He died July 12, 1896 in Franklin county, Virginia and is buried in the Brooks-Mattox Cemetery on Virginia Route 834 just off Route 40 East, between Glade Hill and Union Hall in Franklin county, Virginia. (Cemetery inscription) Buried on his home plantation. Samuel Gabriel married Sarah "Sallie" Ann Dent, daughter of Thomas Dent, on December 28, 1825 in Pittsylvania Co., Va.. Their children: Permelia Frances"Fannie" Mattox, Mary Jane Mattox, Sarah Elizabeth Mattox, William Gabriel Mattox, Edwin Dent Mattox, Samuel Mattox and Pleasant Dickerson Mattox. 2) Daniel Mattox- born June 22, 1802 in Franklin County, Virginia. Died in Georgia. Daniel married Sarah "Sallie" Whitehead. No record of children. 3) Permelia Mattox (aka Milly V. Mattox)- born in 1807 in Franklin County, Virginia. Died in 1833 in Franklin County, Virginia. Permelia married Cluffee Martin Brooks-son of William Brooks and Mary Sellers. Their children: William Daniels Brooks and Mary Ann Brooks. 4) Martha Matilda "Mattie" Mattox- born January 3, 1812 in Bedford Co, Va. and died in 1851 in Franklin County, Virginia. Martha married William R. Housman, son of David Housman and Lucy Kemp on December 3, 1846 in Franklin Co., Va.. Their children: Gabriel D. Jennings Housman and Margaret Ann Flora Housman. Notes on Gabriel D. Jennings Housman: He was living in Kansas City, MO., in 1891. His name from will of Gabriel V. Mattox, 1/6 part of parcel of land. Notes on Margaret Ann Flora Housman: She was bequeathed a negro girl named Martha Matilda and her future increase and 1/6 part of parcel of land in Gabriel V. Mattox will. 5) Margaret P. Mattox- born November 3, 1816 in Franklin County, Virginia. Died in 1901 in Virginia. Margaret was called, "cousin PUG" by Michael Townsend Mattox. Maragaret received one negro girl named Ann and her increase in Gabriel Mattox Will. Margaret P. married Jeremiah Barbour, December 16, 1851 in Franklin Co., Va.. Their only child listed as A.L. Barbour. 6) David Preston (Polk) Mattox- born February 3, 1815 in Franklin Co., Va. Died February 17, 1900 in Va. David P. Mattox was married three times: a) Martha Jane (Elizabeth) Bolling Cook- daughter of Thomas Cook and Nancv Bolling. Married November 18, 1839 in Pittsylvania, Co., Va. . Their children: Gabriel Thomas Mattox, Harmon Cook (Columbus) Mattox, John William Mattox, Samuel Cook Mattox, James Henry Mattox, George Daniel Mattox, Sarah F. Mattox.. b) Elizabeth S. (Betty) Mitchell. Married before 1860. Their children: Mary J.C. Mattox and Mattie J.E. Mattox. c) Sarah "Sallie" Semones. Their children: David Wesley (Wes) Mattox, Sallie Mattox-died in infancy, infant Mattox, infant Mattox. Notes on David Preston Mattox: He was a rural mail carrier. He was buried February 17, 1900 in Mattox Cemetery in Franklin Co., Va. Some refer to him as David "Polk" Mattox. Notes on Martha Jane (Elizabeth) Bolling Cook: She and David Preston Mattox were 2nd cousins. Notes for David Mattox and Sarah Semones: David Preston Mattox was a widower, 59 years old, when he married Sallie Semones, age 38. 7) John Tracy Mattox- born May 9, 1820 in Franklin Co.,Va. Died July 24, 1880 in Franklin Co., Va. -age 60 years, 2 mo. 15 days. John Tracy Mattox was a farmer. He married Elvira Jane Cook, daughter of Harmon Cook and Margaret Bolling on December 18, 1845 in Bedford Co., Va.. Their children: Melissa Ann Mattox, John Lewis Mattox, Samuel Daniel Mattox, Harmon Gabriel Mattox, Harriet Frances Mattox, Nancy Elizabeth Mattox, Emma Jane Mattox, Mary Ida Mattox, Margaret Ella Mattox, Sally Victory Mattox. Notes on Elvira Jane Cook: In 1891, Elvira was living in the Gabriel mattox old home west of Union Hall, Va., with 2 single daughters. Marriage notes on John Tracy Mattox and Elvira Cook: They also had twin boys born on February 1, 1850 that died in infancy in addition to the 10 listed children.
