Harvey Maddox,  64,  widely known Montpelier resident, commited suicide Monday afternoon sometime between the hours of 2:30 and 5:30 o'clock by hanging himself with a heavy rope to a rafter in a garage at the rear of the Dan Marker residence, now vacated.
Despondency and worry over ill health are believed to have prompted Mr. Maddox in his rash act.
The body, with life extinct, was found about 6 o'clock by Will Thornburg, a distant relative, operator of the Red Crown filling station at Montpelier, after an extensive search. Dr. James A. Taylor, Montpelier physician, was notified and the body cut down, after which Dr. James U Dodds, of this city, county coroner, was called. Dr. Dodds conducted his inquest ______ the evening.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary, residing at home; two sons, Robert and Elmer, of Kansas; one brother, "Ken" Maddox, residing north of Montpelier, and two sisters; Mrs. Sarah Shields, Montpelier and Mrs. Laura Markley of Bluffton, who is now in Ohio.

The daughter, Mary Maddox, left her home about 2:30 o'clock to go to the business section of Montpelier, later coming to Hartford City. At the time of her departure, Mrs. Maddox, was at a Montpelier church. The wife returned about 3 o'clock and was unable to find her husband. Later she discovered his knife, watch and some money on a library table. Sensing the unusual in this exhibit of Mr. Maddox's belongings, she made a short search around the house and later went across the street to the home of _______ Johnson, summoning Mrs. Johnson to aid her in the search. The two made an extensive search of the premises and the adjacent property.

Becoming thoroughly alarmed,  Mrs. Maddox then called Will Thornburg and the hunt was continued through truck patches and about the vacant Marker home.  Climbing a ladder into the loft of the garage, Mr. Thornburg struck a match and discovered the dangling corpse. He then continued into the loft and found that Mr. Maddox was either unconscious or dead. Fearing the shock to Mrs. Maddox, Mr. Thornburg failed to tell her of the tragedy immediately in an effort to summon Dr. James Taylor. He was later compelled to go to the Taylor office with Frank Johnson to summon the physician. The three then returned and cut the corpse down.
The rope used by Mr. Maddox for the death trap contained a heavy steel ring at the lower end. This he shaped into a noose by drawing the rope through the ring, holding and standing to a board at the side of the garage loft. Evidence indicated that he later attempted to recover the side of the garage. Burns on his neck would indicate, according to officials, his struggles. The neck was not broken, his death, according to officials, being caused by strangulation.
Mr. Maddox had been in ill health for about four years, friends stated. His decline had been marked from the time of an accident when he was struck by an automobile.. Prior to the accident, he had been engaged in the insurance and real estate business. For the past some time, however,  he had not been actively engaged in any business or vocation.
Mr. Maddox was a member of the Montpelier Methodist church The Maddox home is located in south Washington street, Montpelier.
Mr. Maddox was a native of Wells county, being born July 15,  1868, the son of W.H. and Eliza Groves Maddox. He was married November 6, 189_, at Hickory Grove to Lulu Shields.
Funeral plans depend upon word from the two sons. Robert, who resides in Sedan, Kansas and Elmer of Madison, Kas.
It is likely the services may be held Friday.
