David Mattox born April 9, 1783 in Bedford County, Virginia.  David Mattox was a plantation owner. He died October 26, 1855 in Ogelthorpe County, Georgia. He was married to Sarah (Sally) Hail on December 1, 1806 in Franklin County, Virginia. She died on March 6, 1856 in Oglethorpe, Georgia.
David Mattox and Sarah (Sally) Hail Mattox had the following children:


1) Nathan Mattox
- born November 2, 1807 in Elbert,Georgia. Died January 9, 1862 in Wilkes County, Georgia. Nathan was a plantation owner. He married Lucy Key. Their children: Sarah Mourning Mattox, Lucy Mattox, Nathan M. Mattox, Thomas Jefferson Mattox, Martha Key Mattox, Christopher Mattox, (Unknown.)
2) John Wesley Mattox
- born November 2, 1809 in Elbert County, Georgia. Died after 1891 in Triplett, Wilkes County, Georgia. John Wesley was a farmer. His wife's name is unknown. It is known that he had a daughter named Mary and another  daughter who's name is not known.

3) Henry Page Mattox
- born October22, 1811 in Elbert County, Georgia. Died February 23, 1893 in Elbert County Georgia. Henry Page was a farmer and lived across Broad River from Michael G. Mattox. He married Sophia Nunnalee. They were the parents of James Mattox, William Henry Mattox and Clark Mattox.

4) Elizabeth Mattox
- born December 15, 1813 in Elbert County, Georgia. Died March 28, 1854 in Georgia. Elizabeth married at the age of 15 to Zachariah Harrison Clark. It is said she gave birth to 13 children. 1 died in childbirth and only 4 children are known: Mary Elizabeth Clark, Lulu Clark, Zachariah Harrison Clark(2) and Susan Anna Clark.

5) Mary V. Mattox
- born March 12, 1819 in Elbert County, Georgia. Died before 1891 in Georgia. Mary V. married Richard V. Gaulding. Their children: William D. Gaulding, Sarah Jane Gaulding, David Gaulding, John Tiller Gaulding, Mary E. Gaulding, Edward G. Gaulding, Lucy G. Gaulding. ((Note: there was a set of twins in this family. One of the children died. It is unknown which remaining child was the surviving twin.)

6) William D. Mattox
- born August 28, 1816. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army in May 1864. He was a member of Company "B" Georgia Regiment and  died in service during the CIVIL WAR in 1864. He married Eureena M. Beall. The names of their 4 children are unknown.

7) Sarah P. Mattox
- born March 28, 1822 in Elbert, Georgia. Died in 1861 at the age of 42 years. Sarah P. married Miles Jennings. He died within the first year of their marriage. She later married James T. Johnson. There is no record of any children.

8) Michael George  W. Mattox
- born April 13, 1825 in Elbert County, Georgia. Died after 1891 in Ogelthorpe County, Georgia. Lived on the Governor Mathews Goose Pond place in Oglethorpe county, Georgia in 1891. Michael George W. was a farmer. It was stated he, "owned some 3 miles up and down Broad River." The name of his wife is unknown.  There is record of one son,  John Robert Mattox.

9) Lucy Jane Mattox
- born January 22, 1828 in Elbert County, Georgia. . She died March 22, 1847 at the age of 19 years..  She married William G. Allen. No children recorded.

10) James Clark Mattox- born August 26, 1830 in Elbert County, Georgia.. He died about 1865. He was a plantation owner. there is no record of a wife or children.
Notes on David Mattox: Thomas McLain (TMcLain@wcsr.com) is descended from Mary V. Mattox, daughter of David Mattox, son of Nathan.  He has additional information on David Mattox and Sarah (Sally) Hail as given to him from a family member.

"David Mattox purchased the old house of Governor Matthews in what was then Wilkes County (now Oglethorpe County).  According to cemetery records (the Mattox Cemetery is located in the Goose Pond district of Oglethorpe County), "He was long a member of the Methodist Church and possessed many Christian virtues."  Sarah Mattox died February 13, 1856 and it was recorded, "She was an affectionate wife and mother, a faithful friend and long a consistent member of the Methodist Church."(-submitted to website 1/09/01)

Here is a listing of the children of Michael George Washington Mattox as indicated in the Oglethrope Co. Ga. Census of 1860, and 1880. Mike, as he was known, is my 4-Great-Grandfather. His wife's name was Elizabeth Jane Mattox.
