Coldplay - Earls Court Wednesday 14th December 2005 |

Support act tonight was Richard Ashcroft who all credit to him knew how to please a crowd. He knew people not paying especially to see him would prefer a "greatest hits" type set & that's roughly what we got. He played several Verve songs adding in a track from his forthcoming album here & there. His voice sounded great & he seemed genuinely nice. Upset he didn't play Song For Lovers though which isn't just my favourite of his songs but one of my favourites of all time. Coldplay arrived onstage at 9.00 with Square One. Although they had the same visual effects backdrop as when I saw them at Crystal Palace earlier this year it was a much better sight in an enclosed arena. It looked fantastic & continued to right through Politik. The effects continued during Yellow when a dozen or so huge yellow balloons filled with glitter were dropped onto the crowd from the top of the arena! They stuck to mainly the same set as earlier this year except X & Y was played instead of What If (good call in my opinion). Also, they added in a song which I'd never heard - How You See The World, which from further investigation I now realise is a bonus track on the Japanese release of the album. Again, I was disappointed there was still no Trouble or Shiver & really can't see how they can justify that. This was a great show though with such highlights as Chris appearing at the back of the arena for the end of Talk to him fluffing the last line of Don't Panic & singing it again. Bless him! One gripe was his need to incorporate other peoples songs in. He actually said "it's Chico time" during Yellow, which I hope was ironic but even if it was I can't believe he would even give that prat his breath! Then during God Put A smile...he somehow incorporated The Darkness "One Way Ticket To Hell & Back" then Madonna's "Hung Up". Purlease! I'll let the fact he insisted on singing Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire" at the end of Until Kingdom Comes go since they did write the song for him. But still! That aside an excellent night from Britains biggest band both right now & for a long time to come I'd imagine. Best songs tonight were Square One, Yellow, God Put A Smile On Your Face, X & Y, The Scientist, Don't Panic, Talk, In My Place. Set List Square One Politik Yellow Speed Of Sound God Put A Smile On Your Face X & Y How You See The World White Shadows The Scientist Til Kingdom Come Don't Panic Clocks Talk ------- Swallowed By The Sea In My Place Fix You 10 out of 10 |
