Well, what can I say? Here we have a living legend of the one of the most influential groups of the 60’s and 70’s. Can he stand up to the test of delivering his old band’s material with a bunch of backup musicians? Judging by the supreme quality of the music last night, I’d say he can. The set list was split into two halves, the first being assorted Floyd material, and one of Waters’ new songs, while the second half was comprised of The Dark Side Of The Moon, played in full. The first part was opened with the classic opener from The Wall, ‘In The Flesh’, a nice little sing-along for all the family from the mind of Pink! Or not, as “the queers against the wall” would say.. A couple of songs later, and the concert gets in full motion. The band launch into “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”, a tribute to the great Syd Barrett, which takes on a new meaning now. This was the point when audience and performer connected, and it stayed that way for the rest of the night. Roger looked really emotional during this one, and I’m really not surprised. The first set was mainly songs from the first two Floyd albums, The Wall, and Animals. The set ended with a great performance of ‘Pigs’ during which a large floating pig was let loose in the night sky, complete with “Impeach Bush now” written on it’s rear. The pig got cut off, and was a good way off into the sky by the time the song ended. Highlights were Riding The Gravy Train, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Pigs, and Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun. A fifteen minute break, during which all the stoners light up again, and wait for the part of the set they all came for. The Dark Side of The Moon. No words can describe this, but I’ll give it a shot anyway. The band come back onstage, and launch into ‘Breathe’, and finish the set with, what a surprise, Eclipse. It really brought that entire album to life, and made me view it from a different perspective. I’m hard pressed to pick anything that was really exceptional, because the entire album could only have been played better by Pink Floyd themselves, but the best moment was Us And Them. After Eclipse, all that could be heard were the roars for an encore, which were answered quite well with Another Brick In The Wall Part II, Vera, and Comfortably Numb. The band finally left the stage for good, and it was over. This was easily the best gig I’ve ever been to in my life, and I don’t think it’s going to be topped anytime soon. Mr. Waters might not be with his old mates anymore, but the new ones can belt out the hits so well, you hardly even notice. 9/10 |
