When in the course of Human events it becomes...well, impelling to use perhaps the greatest words of maybe the greatest revolutionarial mind of history - ole Tom's - you might think that something is up. Well, it could be. If we want it to be. Let's all imagine we're Civilization managers for a moment and look at our largest waste of money, setting aside for now the rest of its downside. One trillion dollars a year - or how much under - is still spent on arms and armies. But we can fix that. And it really is our job.
My generation was born to the Cold War and we all thought at times that we would be obliterated by it. All blown to seven parts of hell, even. But we are now ten years from its demise, as fragile as it all is. Or seems. And we must build on that step, like we have the ones from our past. We need to stand down our militaries. Bold stroke end the war option. And free up that what - 2 or 3 percent of our world GDP? - for infinitely better things for Humanity which, of course, includes us all.
Just imagine being in the forever venerated generation that ended war for good on old Mother Earth - from those of you who fought even in World War I, saved our world in World War II, for Godssakes, and or dealt with the rest of the hell that leadership has put us through, to our children who could be the first ever to never have to deal with war.
Never will happen, I think I just herd most of you think (a big part of the problem right there, isn't it, what we are conditioned to think?). Well, five years after starting this adventure I found Walter "and that's the way it is" Cronkite predicting in "Popular Mechanics" that the idea explored herein should be fact before the end of the next millenium, if not century. Stoked the heck out of me. O, but this novel, I'm pretty sure, isn't that great American one we all fervently and reverently await. But then when Uncle Walty gives you credence - let alone clear water and revival - maybe, just maybe, there's really something to go for. So I have strong hope here that you might grace this exploration of the possible - you know, spend the few bucks and 24 hours of reading time - and have some dang laughs and smiles along the way. On our journey to life without war, military and one wasted gigabuck a year.
If not now, when? If not us, whom? To quote another hero of a lot of us.
