THE SCREAMING EAGLES William Everett Beckner,my father, was born Sept.25,1913 at Engleside Wva. He was the son of Alonzo and Lucy Beckner. He married Frances Lillian Blankenship Oct.23,1941. She was the daughter of Paris and Cartie Blankenship... William Everett Beckner was inducted into to United States Army March,24,1942 at the age of 29... Sometime after Basic Training, he volunteered for special training, which was done in secret at Fort Campbell.. He became one of the first of the 101st Airbourne Division.. He departed Sept.5,1943 for England.. His engagements with the enemy occurred at "Normandy"-- "Northern France"-- "Rhineland"-- "Ardennes"- "Bastonge"-- "Holland"-- and "Berchtesgaden"-- His Commanding Officer at Bastonge was General Macullof, under General Maxwell B. Taylor.-- My father was one of the troops surounded at Bastonge, and nicknamed The Battered Bastards of Bastonge.-- He was discharged July,27,1945. The 101st Airbourne Division was the first Special Service Force.-- Even today the men of the 101st are trying to compete with what these men did..
