PICTURES OF THE OLD CEMETERY |

Below are pictures taken in the old cemetery on Compton Mountain, in Buchanan County Va. I went back and took other names and dates from the gravestones that surround the old tree. Some of the stones only have initials and some have the names. But now I am positive that this is the old "Church" and "Mullins" cemetery, probably their family cemetery. There are other families in this cemetery, but the section I am interested in is the one with the Mullins and Churchs. I believe the stone marked "J.C." is Joel Sr. and the unmarked stone on the other side is Caroline. There are several old unmarked graves. In the line directly below the tree is old Mullins graves. We know that Nancy Church married Moses Mullins One stone reads Moses Mullins , died 1918, it states his age but I can't make out the writing. There is an unmarked grave beside him, and I believe that is his wife, Nancy "Church" Mullins, (daughter of Joel Sr. & Caroline). Next to the unmarked grave is Crocket Mullins, died March,1929,( this is the son of Moses & Nancy). Next is Waty Rife, died, Sept. 1934, (this is the daughter of Moses & Nancy). Next to Waty is G.P. Rife, this I believe is the husband of Waty , George Rife. On the other side of Moses grave are two grave with only initials, One grave has the initials O.M.. this could be Ollie "Mullins" McKinney, (daughter of Moses and Nancy), the stone next to that one reads, L.M. This could be Lee McKinney, Ollie's husband. |

Below is a picture of the Cemetery on Compton Mountain. The large tree in the distance is the tree where the old gravestones are embedded deep in its roots. |

Below is a picture of the gravestone imbedded in the roots of the old hickory tree. At this time there was only a slight imprint of writing there. |

We, took a brush and water and the writing on the stone can be read.Below, the stone reads.. J.C. , Dide, (died), April, 1876. I believe this is the grave of Joel Church. |

Below are pictures of the gravestones on each side of the tree. The arrow points to the stone deep in the roots of the tree. There is no writing on the part that is above ground and the roots are so tight around it , that it cant be moved. If the grave on the other side of the tree is Joel , then this is probably Caroline grave, since she died before he did. On the other stone leaning, is the stone with J.C. chisled on it. |
