The Sideshow Banner series is an illustrative narrative contained within a unique world that no longer exists except in a few lingering echoes at Coney Island. It was a nomadic culture of outsiders who made their “nut” from the mixed reactions of revulsion and attraction from the town folk. The characters and stories expressed in these paintings are original fiction, based on that world. Their stories are not merely implied in the work, but are painted in full on some of the banners.

My Abstract pieces don’t require reading skills or even conscious thought. They are based on the physical universe, but are meant to be reacted to in the way that we react when we look through a microscope or a telescope or at a sunset or a leaf. The actual functions of a leaf or a cell or a star are more amazing than their mere appearance, but our reaction to the shapes, colors and textures is like love at first sight. These Calligraphic works are not your wedding invitation. Letters originated as images and evolved into symbols. Now they express concepts beyond our physical world and speak to our emotional and intellectual realms. A picture, they say, expresses a thousand words, but a word can invoke a thousand images, ideas and emotions in your mind. Images — not only derived from the combination of the symbols — but the styles, colors, emphasis and distortions.
