Now standing by the cross of Jesus, was his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary of Magdala. And when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing by, he said to his mother, Woman, behold your son! Then he said to the disciple, Behold your mother! And from that hour that disciple took Mary to his own home. And it was about the sixth hour, and the sun was darkened, and the earth was covered with darkness for three hours (till the ninth hour). And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, and he said, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Jesus Christ was separated from God by the sins of mankind that had been placed upon him. Isaiah 59:2 And some of those who were standing by, when they heard that, said, Behold, This man is calling Elias. After that, Jesus Christ knew everything had happened, that the word of God said would happen to him, and he said, I am thirsty. Now seated nearby there was a vessel and it was full of vinegar that was mixed with poison. And straight away one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with the vinegar, and he put it on a reed of hyssop, and he put it near Jesus Christ's mouth for him to drink it. And the rest of those people who were standing by said; Leave him alone; let's see if Elijah comes to take him down. Then after Jesus Christ had accepted the vinegar that was mixed with poison, he cried out with a loud voice, and he said, It is finished: Father into your hands I commit my life, breath (spirit): and when he had said that, he bowed his head, and his life, breath (spirit) left his body. * Myrrh: An aromatic gum of the cistus. Cistus: A shrub that has red or white flowers. ** Hyssop: Plant, small bush, aromatic herb. The plant was used in Jewish rites for sprinkling. *** Each one of the soldiers may have taunted Jesus with the reed containing the sponge filled with vinegar! http://www.oocities.org/noelenejoy/my-index.html |
