| The Woman and the Alabaster Box. This story is taken from the old King James Version of the Holy Bible. Copyright (C) by Noelene Rout 28th September 2004 All Rights Reserved. Six days before the passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead was. And in Bethany they made Jesus a supper. And one of the Pharisees, Simon the leper, invited Jesus to come and eat with him. So Jesus went into Simon's house, and he sat down at the table. Martha was serving, and Lazarus was also one of the guests who was seated at the table with Jesus. Many Jews also came to the supper because they knew that Jesus was there, but they didn't come to the supper because of Jesus, they came because they wanted to see Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. And Mary, a sinful woman from the city of Bethany, when she found out that Jesus was at Simon's house, took an alabaster box which had a pound of spikenard in it, and she came to Jesus as he was seated at the table. And she stood behind him and she was crying, and she began to wash his feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hairs of her head, and she anointed his feet with the ointment, and she kissed his feet, and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But when the disciples saw what happened, they were angry within themselves, and Judas Iscariot, the one who was to betray Jesus, Simon's son, said, Why was this ointment wasted? This ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and that money could have been given to the poor? And the disciples talked about Mary. But Judas didn't say this because he cared about the poor, he said it because he was a thief, and because he had the purse, and he carried all of the money that was put into the purse. When Jesus understood what the disciples were saying, he said to them, Leave her alone, Why are you troubling the woman she has performed a good work upon me. You will always have the poor with you, and whenever you want to you can do good to them: *but I will not always be with you. She poured this ointment on my body before my death, to do what she could, she came to anoint my body for my burial. Truly I tell you, Wherever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, what this woman has done, will be talked about in memory of her. Now when Simon the leper, the Pharisee which had invited Jesus to supper, saw what had happened, he said in his mind, If this man was a prophet, he would have known who and what type of woman this is that touched him: because she is a sinner. And Jesus answered Simon and said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you, And he said, Master, speak on. And Jesus said to Simon, There was a creditor which had two debtors: one owed him five hundred pence, and the other owed him fifty pence. And when they had paid him the money, he forgave both of them. tell me then, which one of them will love him the most? Simon answered and said, the one whom he forgave the most I suppose. And Jesus said to him, You have judged right. And Jesus turned to Mary, and said to Simon, You see this woman? I came into your house, and you didn't give me any water for my feet: but she has washed my feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. You didn't kiss me once: but this woman, *ever since she came in, did not stop kissing my feet. You didn't anoint my head with oil: but this woman has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, Her sins, which are many, have been forgiven; because she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, that person loves little. And Jesus said to Mary, Your sins are forgiven. And everyone who sat at the table with Jesus began to say inside of themselves, who is this that forgives sins also? And Jesus said to Mary, Your faith has saved you; go in peace. Q. Who was this woman with the alabaster box? A. The woman with the alabaster box, was Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha. Mary used to sit at the feet of Jesus Christ and listen to his words. John 12:1,2..Luke 10:38-42 * I will not always be with you (in person. Matthew 28:20) * ever since she came in she did not stop kissing my feet. Wycliffe.
