As members of Rovers, the 9th Guelph Crew chose to follow the knighthood theme, the most popular theme among Rover Crews. Upon joining the Crew, a new member will go through a brief Squireship period. Upon sucessful completion of the Squireship phase and the Squire's Vigil, the new member would be invested as a Knighted Rover in the Crew.
Who Is Sucellus?
Sucellus - A Celtic God of agriculture and forests, and of alcoholic beverages , and a hammer god. He is often portrayed with his wife Nantosuelta (Goddess of Nature).
Sucellus is often protrayed as a mature bearded male with the identifying symbols of a long-handled hammer, or a beer barrel suspended from a pole. Nantosuelta generally carries a model of a house on a long pole. Sucellus and Nantosuelta are often accompanied by other symbols such as barrels, pots, dogs and ravens, from which it is assumed that they were associated with beneficence, domesticity and prosperity. The hammer may denote a connection with thunder, rain and fertility.
Why Did The 9th Guelph Rovers Choose Sucellus?
Guelph is a town founded on agriculture, with the University of Guelph's - Ontario Agriculture College being one of the most commonly known and revered parts of our community. As members of Scouts Canada, the members of the 9th Guelph Knights of Sucellus Rovers find a strong committment to nature (forests), and to the preservation of nature. We picked Sucellus because he is God of agriculture and forests as well as he symbolizes the strong Celtic heritage within our Crew.
