GDRA ROWING TEAM STRUCTURE
All interested teenagers in the greater Dayton, OH area, ages 14 to 18, who want to row are allowed to row with Greater Dayton Junior Rowing!
Our team, GDRA Junior Rowing, is a composite of teens from many different high schools in and around Dayton! Everyone has a great time being together, having fun, working hard, and enjoying new friendships.
There can be a long learning curve learning to row well by developing excellent rowing skills and good conditioning, so young people are advise to start rowing as soon as they can!
Tall people usually make excellent rowers, but people of all shapes, sizes, and conditioning can become excellent rowers, too!
The coaches decide the boat lineup selections!
All rowers are encouraged to practice
....as much as possible
....as smart as possible, and
....as hard as possible during each practice session!
The men's and women's components of the GDRA Junior Rowing program are divided into the following four (4) groups:
(MV) Men's Varsity Boat - 8 members and a coxswain
(MJV) Men's Junior Varsity Boats - All other experienced male rowers
(WV) Women's Varsity Boat - 8 members and a coxswain
(WJV) Women's Junior Varsity Boats - All other experienced female rowers
(MNA) Men's Novice "A" Boat - 8 members and a coxswain
(MN) Men's Novice Boats - All other novice male rowers
(WNA) Women's Novice "A" Boat - 8 members and a coxswain
(WN) Women's Novice Boats - All other novice female rowers
VARSITY Crews
Practice is required four (4) days per week: Monday through Friday with Thursday off.
Members will only be excused from practice for extreme circumstances and for only a maximum of four (4) excused absences during the rowing season.
There will be no unexcused absences.
All excused absences must be approved by coaching staff, in writing, at least 24 hours in advance.
Failure to attend practice will seriously jeopardize position in the varsity boat.
All races are mandatory.
Varsity letters will be awarded to all rowers who row in at least five (5) varsity races in a year during the Spring and Fall rowing seasons, and are not removed from the varsity team for disciplinary reasons.
Saturday practices are optional for individual development or boat advancement.
When a boat development session is scheduled by the coaches for a Saturday, it becomes a mandatory practice.
JUNIOR VARSITY Crews
There is no attendance policy for the Junior Varsity Crew, however, attendance is an important consideration when selecting rowers to advance to the varsity crew and attendance will be monitored.
You get out of rowing what you put into it. You will become better conditioned, have better rowing technique, and will enjoy rowing more...the more you practice.
Practice will be held four (4) times per week: Monday through Friday with Thursday off.
NOVICE "A" Crews
The same guidelines for Varsity (above) apply with the following exceptions:
There will be six (6) excused absences allowed.
The Novice "A" will not be given a varsity letter.
Practice will be held three (3) times per week: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
NOVICE Crews
There is no attendance policy for the Novice Crew, however, attendance is an important consideration when selecting rowers to advance to the Novice "A" crew and attendance will be monitored.
You get out of rowing what you put into it. You will become better conditioned, have better rowing technique, and will enjoy rowing more...the more you practice.
Practice will be held three (3) times per week: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
NOTE: Thursday and Saturday practices are optional, unless a boat and their coach agree to schedule special practice. Otherwise, all rowers are encouraged to attend practices Thursdays and Saturdays to work on sculling skills or other sweep rowing technical difficulties. Coaches will be available for specialized workouts.
