I visited the grave of Harrison Newton August 2003 in Grundy Co. MO. Newton McRay Cemetery. Rhea & Monroe Co's TN , Spottsylvania, Co. VA. is hand written into the cemetery inscription book but NOT on the stone. Who wrote that we wonder.? What evidence do they have of Virginia before Tennessee?
I found theNewtons in this website in TN  land records and 1810 census. Found a land document too.    If your Newtons are  of this county. Please write! roznewton@juno.com

Henry and Sarah Newton of Monroe Co. TN
And Their Descendants
Wilda Newton Page originated THE NEWTON QUARTERLY. Next editor was Shirley Newton Gorevin Loman of New England Newton lineage.  Jim Newton of Ohio followed. His line I do not know. At his death, the Quarterly became defunct. His son cleaned out the  files, destroying those he did not give to his uncle --  their line.
The QUARTERLY is found in several genealogical libraries such as The Genealogy Center of Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Wilda's files are of course with her descendants of whom I have no address location.  Would love to know if her children are following this pursuit.
Contributors to this page:    Many THANKS! to each contributor!

Newton WILLS: Atached to these pages are three wills of Tennessee Newtons. They were discovered on microfilm  while seeking documentation for Henry and Sarah. Connection to Henry & Sarah unknown if at all.   They are presented with hope they may be useful to other Newton researchers. There is one Henry Newton Will in Spotsylvania records. He gave to son John and wife Anne. Had given "all he intended to other children wom he did not name! If you wish to contribute more wills, I will be happy to add them.   Sarah Newton: saranwill.html John Newton: johnnwill.html and  Henry Newton:henrynwill.html/
1. HENRY1 NEWTON died Unknown. He married SARAH. She died 1853 in Monroe, Co. TN.  He is found in early Monroe county Tax Lists. Write me for a timeline of documentation and citatons. Henry  lived in Tax district 6 in 1836.  Their son Henry was murdered in 1849. Their son, his brother Charles was listed as prosecutor.  Follow up showed that this case was never prosecuted.  Census records and a few brief  items of things happening "down by Newtons", is what we have found to date. Stay tuned. Court records and land records are going to be searched. We next look at a few family letters.
Letter to Rose from Wilda Page Fritch Texas 19 Oct 1982 ""The list of the children that I have, of Henry and Sarah, was taken from the Bible of Francis Marion, their son who was born in 1834 - he was 17 years younger than my great grandfather Harrison, and was only 4 when Harrison left home, but even so, I think we can trust his list- and said list agrees with a census or two, as to the number of children. Our family of Newtons were intelligent, curious people, all had some degree of education so I am sure we could all read and write.
Letter June 27, 1982 from Wilda Page Fritch Texas " my grandfather was at the Battle of Shiloh where he was captured, in prison in Macon and Montgomery for 6 months, exchanged, back into service- and at the Battle of Atlanta, but was discharged before the March to the Sea, shortly after the battle of Atlanta. I have a copy of Francis Marion's service record from a granddaughter, however."
Letter July 28, 1982 from Wilda Page, Fritch Texas".."The older children at home after the death of their parents did move over to Hamilton County before 1860."
We would like to find descendants of other children.  Wilda records 14 Children. A letter fron the daughter of a  younger child of  Henry and Sarah said there were 17 children 13 boys and 4 girls.
Letter to Rose from Wilda Page, Fritch Texas Apr 26, 1984. " The first thing I ever saw about my Henry Newton was that he owned land in Rhea County in 1823 - I thought "Oh that isn't mine - we do not have anyone named Henry in our family. " I was wrong about his being mine - he was,. Anyway, Henry and Sarah lived in Monroe County from the time it was organized until she died in 1853 - and in 1860 kids remaining at home were on the Hamilton Co. Census. And that is as much as I have ever found out- Yes, Tennessee is hard to research because of the Civil War burnings- A Mr. Lee of Monroe Co. told me the court house there had been burned twice." Note: Land record has been found for Rhea Co. TN.  Looking for where Sarah died and where Henry went after 1850 census.

According to family lore passed down from the family of William Francis Newton, he was the last child born to America and William. William was born 2 June 1871 and 8 days later the mother died and William was placed with the Louis Pate family who raised him. Discovery of the two census below reveals his randparents raised him to 7 at least.  Charley and Louis Pate got the young boys jobs in the mines in Webb City, Jasper, MO, after their dad died.  Photo: photos.html

It pays to research in the field and on site.  Found a census transcription. Wm G. was not in Census Index because they indexed the head-of-family and he was living as son-in law!  Found this first, it lead me to look at 1870. We never dreamed Beans came to MO first!  William married soon after this census and we have connected with the second wife family. All we knew was "Dad was on his own since he was 13."  He is the Henry that is 12 in the above census.  He next lived with Louis Pate family, brother of the new wife.  We seek descendants of America Bean Newton's brother John above. Where did John and his parents go from Dallas County Missouri..? Perhaps his family records will reveal more.
That William  G. was buried in Litchfield, Crawford, KS is from family lore of Paul Dempsey Newton, son of William Francis Newton. The poorly filled out death certificate of William Gilbert Newton for this date reads "Mrs. Newton" but we believe it is the record of William since the letter of daughter Nellie states they lived in Litchfield at the time of her fathers death, and we have documented the burial site of Mrs. Amanda Louise Pate Newton his second wife -- in Webb City MO beside a son. A trip to the Litchfield cemetery not far from KOAM TV Pittsburg, Crawford, KS, reveals lots of graves but no stone for William G.

13. FLOYD GILBERT3 NEWTON (WILLIAM GILBERT2, HENRY1)27 was born April 1883 in Louisburg, Dallas, MO, and died November 03, 1909 in Joplin, Jasper, MO. photos.html
Notes for FLOYD GILBERT NEWTON: Floyd was killed in an explosion of the Electric Light Mine in Joplin MO on his first day as a powder monkey. News Headlines in Joplin Missouri News Papers.; He forgot to wet down the area before lighting it seems.
"I remember my Uncle Floyd's funeral, I had never been to one before, we rode to the grave yard in a surrey with the fringe around the top pulled by two brown horses. .... It is strange to me now, but at that time it seemed perfectly normal to have an open casket. (It wouldn't be done today I am sure.) He was buried in a Childs' coffin and all that showed was a strip of golden hair and all the rest was covered with a cloth. It made quite an impression on me. " Letter 17 July 1983 to Rose and Jim Newton from Estella Martin.
Would love to hear fronm Estellas family. It has been several years now.
