D-Ranger |

Once, not so long ago I became enraptured with the Japanese genre known as Sentai, the original shows that Power Rangers is chopped up and re-edited from. While overall the genre is extremely formulaic, there was some coolness there that appealed to my sense of Superhero action. I became a big fan for a while, participating in forums related to the topic and watching as much of it as I could get my hands on. On one of those forums people regularily posted their own fan-made Sentai series, most of which were terrible by any standards, and a handful which were actually quite well done stories that could be said to quite superior to the source material. Drawing inspiration from those stories, I decided to write my own Sentai series, D-Ranger (Short for Dimensional Ranger). This series was about a young man named Brad Ryans who suddenly found himself accidentally given the battle armour of a interdimensional cop who also happened to be his counterpart from another reality. Around the same time, a rift in space opened which allowed a collection of Interdimensional Pirates called the Blood Rain Syndicate to enter our world and begin raiding to steal unique items to our reality. So simple form is that baddies showed up and Brad, true to the young hero's calling, rose up to fight them and learn as he went, with the help of the suit's computer AI Pixelle, and a few other friends he made along the way. Brad's adventures were planned to last a year, or twenty stories, at which time the rift would close and Brad's services would no longer be needed. I got about halfway through that year before my interest in the project waned, and I never got back to it. I did plan the rest of the year, but my interest in Sentai dimmed enough that I never finished it, despite my hopes to get back to it again someday. In truth, the first stories aren't that good, heck most of it isn't that good, but it was a writing experiment for me and I developed a lot as a writer while working on it. Also I had a few people who enjoyed these stories a lot, and I appreciated their kind comments. One of them even drew the picture you see on this page based on my notes, which was extremely kind of him. |
