Domestic

If you could not be wealthy, sometimes being a servant to one who was wealthy was just as good. While the Chinese did pratice slavery during some periods, it was not of the intergenerational kind, and the children of indentured servants were not slaves or servants themselves by default. It was common for daughters of farmers and poor families to become servants, and often the sons as well if it were possible. Most rich familes had dozens of maids, and a few cooks, stableboys, and groundskeepers. It was also normal for lords and ladies to have a personal attendant (or three) who would specifically serve them alone. Of course the domestics in a household often form something of a family, and will do their best to watch out for each other.
