Noble

To be nobility in ancient China was to be part of a web of family politics and alliances, favors and secrets are the currency the nobility trade in. Noble families could be of many lines, sometimes they were related to royalty, sometimes they were simply very very rich people granted titles or lands because of service to the empire. They usually had a family specialty, be it trading, academics, martial prowess, moneylending, or or just the pursuits of the idle rich. Wherever they came from, most were proud of their status, and looked down on the more common people who had not been blessed by the gods as they had.
