Underfolk (Badgren)
A Player Character Race
for 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons
On the world of Mirinos,
there is but one race that dwells beneath the ground, not a myriad of races,
like in other worlds. These creatures, dubbed the "Underfolk" by
unenlightened peoples, live close to the earth's surface, in naturally
hilly and forested areas. The "Badgren", as they call themselves,
are generally shy and isolationist creatures, venturing out only to sell
the gems and ores which they mine in their subterranean homes.
Personality
Badgren are, in general,
shy creatures, who rarely venture into more "civilized" realms. They
are kind and generous when encountered, though, and stout defenders of
their homelands. They will mostly remain quiet, until something of
import, or something on which they are well informed on, becomes the topic
of conversation. Than, they will utter a few choice words, and go
back to their silence.
Physical Appearance
Like the dwarves of other
worlds, to whom they are commonly compared, the Badgren are a short but
broad race, weighing easily as much or more than a human. Besides
this, though, the Badgren do not resemble dwarves very much at all.
The Badgren appear almost as a mix of dwarf and badger. They have
coarse hair that covers the back of limbs and the face, which they keep
short against the skin. They have very broad faces, broader even
than a dwarf's, and their bottom canine teeth protrude slightly out of
their mouths. Also, the skin of a Badgren is very thick and resilient
to wounds. This, combined with their strong bones, allows Badgren
to burrow through soil without even needing to use tools, instead using
their bear hands.
Relations
As has been previously mentioned,
the Badgren are an isolationist and shy society. The only group which
they have regular contact with are the Sun Dwarves, to whom the Badgren
sell their gems and valuable metals, which the Sun Dwarves turn into beautiful
jewelry and ornamentation. Badgren and Sun Dwarves get along fairly
well in general. The relations of Badgren with humans varies, generally
with the attitude of the humans. However, Badgren are always even
handed and give most humans a chance to prove their worth. The ferocity
and savagery of most elves does not sit well with the calm Badgren, and
so these races do not get along well. As for the other races of Mirinos,
the Badgren handle these on a case to case basis, much like humans.
Alignment
Badgren who are raised in
their home societies are almost always good. While they have a healthy
respect for law, they themselves have no set code of conduct. Instead,
those individuals who do not do their part or whom raise tumult in Badgren
society are cast out by election. This form of communal governing
creates a very calm, and steady society. Only those who cause large
amounts of disturbance are ever cast out, though Chaotic actions are frequently
not supported by Badgren society.
Badgren Lands
Badgren inhabit barrows
just beneath the surface of natural, wooded areas, like glens and forests.
Their homes all have surface entrances, as well as tunnel connections between
them. Badgren hold a great love for wooded areas, and for nature,
so their barrows and warrens must always be near such places. Often,
tunnels lead deeper into the earth from Badgren lands, and it is from these
deep tunnels that they gather their gems and metals. Though they
collect minerals, Badgren themselves generally prefer leather and wood
for their possessions. The minerals and gems are considered gifts
from their deity, and with it, they can acquire more items of the surface
world, which they love.
Religion
The Badgren worship an almost
unknown deity, dubbed He Who Sleeps Beneath, not only by outsiders, but
by the Badgren themselves. He Who Sleeps Beneath is a Neutral deity
of Earth, Protection, and Strength. His preferred weapon is the pick. Religion is vastly important
to the Badgren, though their faith has no organized churches or official
priests. Instead, every individual Badgren may become a priest of
He Who Sleeps Beneath.
Language
Badgren have their own spoken
tongue, a deep, rolling language that sounds something like echoes.
Unbeknownst to most, the Badgren also have their own written language,
which uses the Terran alphabet. Badgren children are always taught
to read their own language and, unlike the other races of Mirinos, they
learn to read Badgren for free.
Adventurers
Badgren adventurers are
incredibly rare. Few Badgren venture away from their homelands.
Those who do are frequently cast aways, whom did not fit in with Badgren
society. Priests of deities other than He Who Sleeps Beneath are
also cast out of Badgren society, as their presence is said to make Him
angry. Finally, Badgren warrens are frequently the victims of attacks
by other humanoids, as they make excellent lairs. Adventurer Badgren
may be the last remaining members of their own clans, searching for another
group of their reclusive peoples to join.
