The Quality Evaluation of University Theses is a Meta-Analysis Model for the diagnosis of their scientific content in all the academic levels, mainly in Master and PHD degrees.

Its utility came from the academic necessity of improve the quality of theses process, as a instrument for the continuos enhancement of university education in a knowledge society.

This Evaluation Model is the product of the Doctoral Thesis presented by its author in the field of Educational Research between the years 2000 and 2001, at the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica.

Utility

The Evaluation Model of University Theses is an instrument for the permanent enhancement of the academic process in a knowledge society. A low or indeterminate quality in the theses process --which is a essential part of university research-- could cause different problems in the general quality of the academic development. Some of this problems could be the following hipothesys:

  • The university research can't accomplish its function in the institutional development.
  • The existence of quality problems in theses could cause a weakness in the social, educational and financial image of the university in the educational market.
  • A reduction of the institutional prestige.


    • One important solution of these hypothetical problems goes through the improvement of university research and its component, the theses process. But this academic task require the evaluation of its present situation. The precise knowledge of theses quality is a previous step in the process of theses and research enhancement.

    PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

    Author have a Doctorate in Educational Research, a Master degree in Educational Administration and a Licenciatura in History. He was a full time investigator in social sciences, mainly in the areas of sociology of communication, culture and leisure, in Cuba since 1975 to 1993, when moved to Costa Rica,with more than 40 completed studies; in Costa Rica participate in the design and execution of the first national youth investigation between 1993 and 1994. Has directed interdisciplinary research teams in Cuba and Costa Rica; he was the chief of the Research Department of the Cuban Institute of Cinema between 1976 to 1982; he was the Chairman of the National Commission for Leisure Research of the National Academy of Sciences in Cuba between 1980 to 1992; he was advisor on different institutions in Cuba and Costa Rica; has been university professor since 1980. He has published 3 books and many press and reviews articles in Cuba, Costa Rica and other countries. Actually, he is the Director of Recreation at the Instituto Costarricense del Deporte y la Recreación.
