Rare items are not very special.... just make you look rich. They have no attack or defence bonus at all. There are very few rares in runescape, every year more and more of them are lost. This factoring in with the increasing numbers of players wanting to buy them, creates a situation of supply and demand, but no supply. This causes the prices to increase. I have been watching rare prices for the last 2 years. So i have a good feeling of how the prices will change.

Reasons for Increase/Decrease: -New skills that cost a lot of money, such as construction. -Groups attempting to raise prices of rares

Tips and Tricks when buying rares: Rares do NOT increase during holidays. Occasionally they will decrease very mildly around the holiday, since everyone wants to get rid of them. Rares such as easter eggs, pumpkins, and half wine aren't the best things to buy. Prices wont go up too dramaticly on these items. Rares NOT to buy: Disk of returning and half wine. These have very unstable prices, and no one acctually wants them, you will be on the fourms for weeks to sell and will end up losing money.

Merchanting Rares: Pros: If you plan on keeping your rare, supposing it is wearable, you can always just wear it and look shnazzy. And in the long run the price will NEVER decrease. Hold on to it for at least 3-6 months. Cons: Prices change every day, ussually only by 500-1000k. And normally you will buy thinking you are getting a good price, and the next day it will drop.

Rare prices: It is very difficult to predict the rate a rare item increases in price. I would say a rare doubles in price every year ( excluding easter eggs, pumpkins, and disks of returning ) When new skills or items come out that require money, people sell their rares. At first this will make rares decrease in price. After a week or two afterwords the rare will almost skyrocket. Often Merchants try to raise the price of rares by grouping up and selling a rare for four times its price. This almost never works, and if it does work it is a very small increase. Party hats are the most unstable rares to buy. A party hat is worth so much that few can afford it. Normally a phat seller would have to be on the fourms for days, even weeks to get a sale. Phat prices may have reached a stability point.
