The Whyalla branch of RSPCA SA was established in 1958 and run by volunteers until 1988 when a full time Inspector was appointed. Assisted by volunteers, two Inspectors and two part time staff operate the Shelter and deal with over 2000 animals each year, while investigating approximately 1500 reports of alleged cruelty in addition to running a boarding facility.

The mission of the RSPCA Whyalla Animal shelter is:
"To provide the best quality animal welfare and care service in South Australia."
To achieve this mission, the staff of the animal shelter undertake to:
- provide clean and comfortable accommodation for our animals
- provide a friendly and caring environment for our animals
- treat sick and injured animals promptly and humanely
- manage lost and released animals in a prompt and caring manner
- ensure that all animals in our care are looked after to a standard in keeping with the principles of the RSPCA
- provide prompt and friendly service to the public
