121st Tactical Fighter Squadron,
113th Tactical Fighter Wing
"Capital Guardians"
Andrews Air Force Base, Washington, District of Columbia, 1981-1989

Based at Andrews AFB, the 121st Tactical Fighter Squadron flew its first F-4D sorties in July 1981. While equipped with F-4Ds, the 121st TFS deployed to the United Kingdom in June 1983 (Coronet Shield) and to Iceland in April/May 1986 (Coronet Kiowa). In 1984, it became the first Guard unit to be trained with the Pave Spike system and Laser Guided Bombs.
Unlike other Guard units which have a dual state/federal status, with the governors of their state as their commanders-in-chief in peacetime, the District of Columbia ANG comes directly under the Commanding General of the District of Columbia. When placed on federal active duty, all Guard units have the President of the United States as their commander-in-chief. 121st TFS received first F-16A/B Falcons in September 1989.
