I joined the Enlisted Reserve in 1957 as an E4 on the basis of 3 years of ROTC. I went on Active Duty with that rank on February 8, 1957. I took basic training and basic army administration course at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. In July 1957, I left for Europe and served as a Personnel Specialist with the U.S. Army Quartermaster Signal School, Europe, at Lenngries, Germany (July 1957-January 1959.) The School trained cooks, supply personnel, and various signal personnel. The Post was basically a battalion-size post which had previously housed German mountain troops. It was in the foothills of the Alps, about 40 miles from Munich. People from Munich came down to the town for skiing on weekends. In the fall of 2007, my good friend and neighbor visited his cousin in Lenngries and although it is no longer a military post, he returned with pictures for me of the buildings as they look today.
Upon leaving Europe, I received a Certificate of Achievement and the Good Conduct Medal. I crossed the Atlantic both going and returning on the same ship, U.S. Navy Ship Randall. We got back to the states, docking in New York, January 31, 1959. I was flown to Fort Jackson that afternoon for processing and separation.
Here, I'm being congratulated by the Company Executive Officer, upon my promotion from E4 to E5 (Specialist 5.)
While stationed in Germany, I took every opportunity to travel to other countries when I was able to get a pass. My travels took me to:
