This is the first (and to date, only) movie for which I was the official costume designer. This is more that just a title change, it required much more work and payed off creativly much more than any project I had done previosly in my career. For this movie I researched all aspects of Irish life in regards to wardrobe. I broke down the script scene by scene and prepared a costume schedule. I contacted all the actors to arranged and carry out costume pulls and fittings. I pulled costumes that need to be rented including doctors, nuns, flight attendents, and priest costumes from CRC. There was a lot of character development done for each character. I think you can tell a lot about a character before they speak a word, just by what they are wearing. I thought about color, fabric, and design for each character. There are a lot of flashbacks in the movie and a number of them involve the characher of Helen. I am very proud of the character arch shown in the costumes she wears. If you lay out her costumes in a line you can see the her grow from school girl to women. The last picture at the bottom of this page, of Catherine and Medbhs shoes, details this asspect of showing character traits through the clothing. It was also my responsibility to reconciled cash advances and petty cash, carry out costume administration, communicate information to all members of the wardrobe and production team, and keep all costume continuity (which was very important for the shots they finished in Ireland). To save money, because this was a low budget movie, we used a room in the studio as the wardrobe room. That means all the wardrobe had to be moved from the trailer to the studio and then back to the trailer to finish the location shots. Each time an inventory had to be taken to assure nothing was missing. Throughout the filming I was also responsible for taking out and picking up all wardrobe items for cleaning or laundering and making minor repairs and alterations to costumes when necessary. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The photos posted here are from the on set still photographer and were taken during the filming of the movie. Thank you to Tammy Hoffs for letting me post them on my site. For more information about this movie please visit the official Red Roses and Petrol website or IMDB |

You can see how different the characters of sisters Catherine Doyle (in the heals) and Medbh Doyle (in the hiking boots) are just by looking at the shoes they wear to the funeral. |
