Welcome to Rubicon Academy
Home of the Rebels
Founded in 1998
We are a private family  homeschool in N.W. Louisiana.  We have Elementary and High School aged children.  We began homeschooling our children in order to ensure that they receive the best education to prepare them for the challenges of the future.  We stress thinking skills and independence.  We do not believe that either public or private schools can provide this for our children.  For interesting reading about schools in our current society, read John Taylor Gatto's  (New York State Teacher of the Year 1991) essay, "The Six Lesson Schoolteacher."

What about TESTING???
We have found the Charlotte Mason philosophy to be the best method for our family school.  Charlotte was an educator who lived in England in the latter half of the 19th century.  By the time of her death in 1923, she had written a body of work based on her own classroom experience and work with parents and teachers that is a tremendous influence on many homeschoolers today.  Her love (and respect) for children and her devotion to excellence inspires many of us.  She believed in using quality, "living" books rather than dull textbooks.  She stressed reading aloud to children from a variety of these sources.

Three fundamental aspects of her "simplified approach" are:  narration (telling back verbally, and later by written means) of these read alouds, copywork (actually copying selections from great literature) to learn proper grammar, punctuatuation, vocabulary usage and therefore practice proper writing technique.  Properly done copywork is also an exercise in proper penmanship.
The third key aspect is the study of nature through firsthand observation.  This "nature study" is a terrific way for a child to learn to truly observe something with attention to details and then to put that down on paper.  When we draw what we see in nature in a Nature Notebook we "picture narrate" it.

Charlotte used these tools in all of the subjects taught in her schools.  Although you cannot go into a store and buy a Charlotte Mason curriculum, you can devise your own.  You can also adapt what you are using to this method.  You can use Charlotte's own books to guide you:
The Original Homeschooling Series Volumes 1-6, and/or you can benefit from the experiences of others who have blazed the trail before you. (The link I gave is to Amazon, but if you like auction sites you can sometimes find the Series there for a good price.)
Charlotte encouraged bringing beauty into the homeschool.  Many of us have added the study of great works of art, music and poetry to our days.  We set aside time to "take tea" with our children and cultivate togetherness over a cup of tea or cocoa.
Here are some actual pages from our students Nature Notebooks.  On the left are clover drawn by our 9th grader and on the right, a study of leaves by our 1st grader.
Here's what helped me to develop the curriculum here at Rubicon Academy:

BOOKS:
A Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola
Charlotte Mason Study Guide by Penny Gardner
Wild Days-Creating Discovery Journals by Karen Skidmore Rackcliffe

SUPPORT GROUPS:
I belong to a local Catholic Homeschool support group, Divine Mercy Home Educators, but have found a tremendous resource in the form of two Charlotte Mason e-mail lists I joined through e-groups.
Here's a link to the Catholic one. These cyber-friends are invaluable because they are involved in day-to-day implementation of this method in their own homes.  We share ideas, challenges, and information with each other.  We also support each other with prayer.

THE INTERNET:
When I want to research something, I get on the 'Net.  If you use a good search engine and are deligent about checking out many sites for differing opinions, you can find answers to just about any question.  There are many good search engines.  I like
Dogpile for thoroughness and Ask Jeeves for a quick answer.  The internet is a great way to be current about trends in education, to find free resources, and to extend the borders of a small town.  Just be sure to use your discernment.  DON'T accept everything you read as fact.  Do the research and check it out!

I've changed the layout of these pages to make them easier to navigate.  Click on the main page for each category to be taken to links for the subpages.  As we plan to homeschool for a long time, adding new classrooms each year,  I thought it best to reorganize my pages.
I plan to keep adding to the pages as regularly as I can.

High School:
Photographs, watercolor paintings, narrations, drawings, CAD work and more.
