In her past life, she was Princess of the planet Mars living in the Phobos Deimos Castle. In present day Tokyo, she is Rei/Raye Hino. The meaning of her name is "Spirit of Fire" or "Fire Soul." Her birthday is April 17, making her an Aries. Her blood type is AB and her favorite gemstone is the ruby. She attends T*A Private Girls' School which is a Catholic school.
She lives at the Hikawa Jinja/Cherry Hill Shrine with her grandfather. As soon as she moved in with him, she went outside and saw two crows. She told her grandfather that their names were Deimos and Phobos and he knew then that Rei was different from other people although he didn't know exactly how. Rei didn't know that the crows were her guardians or that they had protected her many years before when she was the Princess of Mars. Deimos and Phobos have human forms just like the cat guardians do, only their human forms are very small giving them the appearance of fairies. Sailor Mars did not know about their human forms until they transformed out of their crow forms to give her the Mars Heart Crystal, allowing her to become Super Sailor Mars when she was in danger in the SuperS season. They also told her how to use the attack Mars Flame Sniper.
Rei has a fiery sort of personality. She loses her temper easily. She is especially irritable with Usagi. Contradictory to this personality trait, Rei can be very serene at times, especially when meditating or fire reading. She's rather stubborn. She cares deeply about the other Sailors and considers Usagi one of her best friends even though you might not think so. She wants Usagi to be the best person she can be so Rei is often tough on her in order to help her in her own way. Rei's best friend is Minako Aino. Rei is mysterious and doesn't trust many people. She likes to be alone to read mangas, meditate, pray, fire read, etcetera. She wants to someday be the head priestess of her grandfather's shrine.
Rei has special powers. She has the ability to see the future when looking into fire and she is very good at fortune telling. She has ESP (extra sensory perception). Her ESP really comes in handy when she is attacking as Sailor Mars. It helps her hit her target precisely even if it is really far away. Rei has a defense/attack she can perform even when she is not Sailor Mars. It is Akuryo Taisan. (When Rei is Sailor Mars, Akuryo Taisan can also be called Mars Fireballs Charge.) For this, she takes an ofuda/anti-evil scroll (a slip of paper with Japanese writing on it), says "Akuryo Taisan!/Evil Spirits, Begone!" and throws it at the enemy, paralyzing them.
Sailor Mars' attacks are Akuryo Taisan/Mars Fireballs Charge, Fire Soul/Mars Fire Ignite, Mars Firestorm Flash, Fire Soul Bird/Mars Firebird Strike, Burning Mandala/Mars Celestial Fire Surround, and Mars Flame Sniper. For Fire Soul, Sailor Mars puts her hands together in a way that makes them resemble a gun and then flames sprout from her fingertips and rush towards the enemy. For Mars Firestorm Flash, Sailor Mars creates a continuous stream of fire which she directs at her opponent. For Fire Soul Bird, Sailor Mars brings her hands together in a gun formation (similar to how she does for Fire Soul) and combines an ofuda with fire to form a bird made of fire (a phoenix) which she then shoots from her fingertips. This bird dives out of the sky and attacks the enemy. For Burning Mandala, Sailor Mars shoots fire all around her from a single fingertip and then that fire forms a vertical ring around her. Glowing orbs with Japanese symbols inside them form within the ring itself and then Sailor Mars brings her hands together like she does for Fire Soul and the entire fire ring goes into her hands. She then shoots it at the enemy. For Mars Flame Sniper, Super Sailor Mars takes a bow and arrow of fire and shoots the arrow at the enemy.
In the manga, Sailor Mars has another attack called Mars Snake Fire. For this attack, Sailor Mars crosses her hands beneath her chin and a snake made of fire forms above her head. The fire snake then attacks her opponent.
