Caasi's Twin Show at the Drawing Room
Ruel Caasi mounted his first show for the year at The Drawing Room from March 19 – April 13, with a twin show entitled "Signum" and "Wounds: Revisited."
"Signum," a collection of works using mixed media on canvas, signaled a new turn in Caasi’s abstraction, while the latter brought his viewers back to his 'Wounds' series he started in 1997.
Almost as a response to the title, Ruel Caasi’s new abstractions, using light industrial materials as medium such as cement, asphalt, epoxy and industrial paint, have added physical presence far stronger than any residual suggestion of imagery. "Signum" focuses on an already-created image along the stretch road and highways-the images and narratives on the road.
Abstractly distilled narratives are “Yellow Lane”, “No Entry”, “Intersection”, “Yield” and deftly juxtaposing scratchy marks in “Skidmark.” All offer an array of geometric shapes fused in expressive elements transforming urban landscape to reveal the visual arrangement suggesting the formation or disintegration as suggested by human and mechanical traffic conditions. Each canvas with small intrusions, striped bands, intersecting lines and completely different palettes are reminders of another order of things, responding to changes in everyday life.
Caasi has been exhibiting in The Drawing Room since 2003, and has steadily built a solid reputation as an outstanding young contemporary artist.
