SPOKEN AND UNSPOKEN LESSONS FROM MY GRANDPA JACK:
1) You'll only learn by trying, You will do it, as I attempted to dock the first sailboat I'd maneuvered bigger than a sunfish, knowing the bow was about to hit the dock

3) You can't live in western NY if you haven't tried Don and Bob's famous chocolate almond custard...just another contribution to my, and any Evans girl's love of chocolate and an appreciation of local flavor
4) Don't touch the rim of a glass with your hands, although the particular holiday doesn't stand out in my mind, I can clearly remember his proper demonstration, and I haven't served a beverage since without remembering
5) You just have to be prepared, after putting a thermometer/compass gadget on the zipper of my new ski jacket
6) Hold on to the moment. On the day of my high school graduation, just before I got in my car to drive to the ceremony, I heard "ah...hey" shouted from behind me--stopping me for a few seconds in the driveway, he gave me the most pleasing nod I may ever receive. And on another occasion, at dinner with my grandparents and parents on the last night of one of our Hilton Head vacations, he specifically had the server wait to take our entree order after we finished appetizers...the company was as important as the food
7) USE YOUR HEAD, indefinitely
8) Walk family or whoever may be visiting to their car. Not once do I remember him simply shutting the door behind me. After I had my license and my own car, there was usually a brief inspection before I departed.
9) Dress for the occasion, from a man who mastered the updated-classic look effortlessly
10) Love to play, whatever the game
