JACK'S LITTLE JOKE ON THE KEUKA LAKE SAILORS Jack related this one to me because it tickled him so. It was one of those quiet afternoons. Hot, no wind, the water was like glass. You look for things to do when you can't sail. For some of us, it was off to a winery or two. For Jack, it was puttering about, making small fixes and repairs. No surprise there. If you look in the dictionary for the word "handyman," you'll see Jack's picture. This day, the "devil" on Jack's left shoulder, spotted all of those idle sailboats across the lake, and the "devil" alerted Jack to their plight. Well, Jack got the M Scow out and somehow got the boat out in the middle in the direction of the park, proceeded to get the boat heeled up, you know, tacking and stuff. he must have taken a bellows out there, because as I said, THERE WAS NO WIND. Jack worked his way back towards the house as the excited multitudes pushed off with their boats to get a final sail in; and, of course when the boats struggled out to where Jack was working it...THERE WAS NO WIND. Jack then parked his butt in a chair on the end of the dock with a cold one in his hand, and watched with a satisfied chuckle as the "sailors" practically had to paddle in if they were to get to shore in time for the evening meal. -Terry O'Connell |
