With all-kids cast, RCP ready for “Honk Jr.”
Starr Shuppert

It isn’t often that you can see a stage full of cute kids from the Rush County area, but thanks to a production that is in the works for the Rush County Players, the opportunity awaits. Next weekend — July 22, 23 and 24 — an all-star cast of local talent will take to the stage at the Rushville Consolidated High School Laughlin Center.

According to producer and veteran of the stage Lisa Boaz, the production that the group has been working diligently on for several weeks this summer is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

“Honk Jr.” is a condensed version of the new Broadway hit based on Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale “The Ugly Duckling,” she said. “Our cast is composed of over 40 local youngsters directed by Kristina Trueblood. Kristina has done an excellent job with this play, and we are looking forward to putting on a great show for the community.”

In addition to Trueblood and Boaz, the production crew includes Janet Foster as assistant director, and Mark Love as technical director.

“There are many others, including parents, who make this happen,” Boaz noted.

According to Boaz, “Honk Jr.” is about a family of ducks living mostly harmoniously with other aquatic animals on a small pond. The much anticipated day arrives when the ducklings hatch and everyone notices that one of the ducks — "Ugly," played by Clayton Foster — is very “different.” He is shunned by others and made fun of, but is loved unconditionally by his mother "Ida" (Becka Craven).

The only other character that gives Ugly lots of attention is the Cat, portrayed by Drew Abury, although his intentions are of a much more devious nature! Ugly’s adventures lead him far from home where he encounters geese, frogs, swans, and scariest of all — humans. During this journey Ugly grows up to realize he is actually not a duck at all, but rather a handsome swan.

"Honk Jr." begins at 8 p.m. July 22 and 23 and 2 p.m. July 24. Tickets are $4 for students and $6 in advance for adults ($7 day of show).

Boaz wanted to note that all tickets for this show will be general admission. You can reserve your seats by calling 938-1711, by logging on to www.rushcountyplayers.org, or by visiting Carter Lanning Paint & Wallpaper. Watch for more details about "Honk Jr." coming soon!
