His essays have been published in many prominent literary re In his late 20s and early 30s Rusty began writing essays—small stories of his life before the fall (paralysis). He wrote them over the course of a decade and filed them away in a closet. Writing became his outlet to scream back at the world. When the need to fight back ended... he started to write novels. In 2003, Rusty did an interview with the local newspaper. The editor later ask him if he'd be interested in doing a column. After a few days he emailed her one of those hidden essays from the closet. Shortly after that, he became a columnist for the Madison County Herald. During that time, countless people phoned or emailed him in regards to his column. He never knew his personal stories of Mam-ma, Granddad and growing up in the tiny town of Newton would resonate in so many hearts. But they did. Soon after his columns were packaged together in book form (Newton Ave) by VanWander Press. "Once upon a time the obscure communities mentioned in Newton Ave were my whole world. I was born there and a significant part of me will always reside there along Newton Ave. and Deere Street—where the old oaks tower and the childhood memories sleep among azaleas and oleander. If you were ever a fan of the movie Stand by Me (1986) or the television series The Waltons (1972 - 1981) or The Wonder Years (1988 - 1993) then you'll relate to my writing. Their is nothing pretentious or earth shattering in my work... only stories as old as time itself about people and places that we all have in common. -- Use the links below (white words in red column) to navigate through my web site, my blog, purchase my books or to email me...." ~Reeves |
