I'd just like to tell all of you who don't know that there's another website, much like Classmates where looking for people is FREE (finally!)! Just go to www.gradfinder.com

I just find it stupid for Classmates to charge us 36 magnificent US dollars to be able to reconnect with old friends... Oh well, I guess it's a way like another to make money off of us!

So spread the word!

Wow, I've been doing it for free for 5 years now ;). Unfortunately GradFinder has never taken off. They only have 3 students listed for RVRHS one of them is me - hehehe.

With any luck they will catch on, but I think Classmates basically has buried anyone who tries to go up against them. I have far more members for RVR than classmates, but how much do you want to bet that there are people who are members here and at classmates even though classmates does not have one listing that I do not have?

This site is the best site for RVR - nobody can beat it - great job Denis! But I have to say I'll add my name in the GradFinder - it is not only targeted for graduates. It has all schools. I am a Navy brat so I will be signing my name to 4 schools across Canada.

Thanks Sophie for sharing this information.

Hey Denis,

Ya I've been on gradfinder for a while but I just got so upset with Classmates when I saw that now, you need to be a Gold member to even SEE the profile of the alumni...

I love your site and Darlene is right, this is the best site but we need to find a way to advertise it more... I have an idea, I'll scream at the top of my lungs for an hour... maybe someone'll hear me ;)

I tell everyone I see from school about this site. You're doing an amazing job... really :) I wish more people knew... so we could know what EVERYONE is up to :)

Keep up the good work :)

I wish more people knew about the site too, but if you do a search on any major search engine for RVRHS or Richelieu Valley Regional High School or even just Richelieu Valley the site does show up in the top 10 consistently.

Classmates is a very expensive service to run so I am not surprised by their decision. I maintain a gold membership there, and have done for the past 4 years, because they do so much advertising and eventually people check it out. Every RVR grad who joins gets an email from me telling them about the RVRHS.ORG site.

I hope Gradfinders.com takes off, but the won't be able to unless the word really gets out.

Hi Denis... yes realy I wanted to congrad you on the site... its realy nice to read about all our old friends and possibly make new ones. The only little thing I would say is... not many french people from RVR know about the site. I know not much to do about that. OH well...

To bad about classemates... I was also desapointed, I realy want to see some old friends again but to pay 50$... not that I'm cheap but its a little to much. Anyways... this is the best one for rvr... with the others we can try to bring more traffic here!!

Cheers...

Hey MJ,

Well I have no problem doing the postings in French, but very very few have been sent in in French and there isn't much I can do about that.

The interface could be bilingual - but for that I would need someone to do translation as my French written skills are lacking. As for getting more people onto the site - that is always my goal. :)

Well Dennis,

I could always be of help for French translation. I know that MJ would probably help too :) We need to make this site accessible to the most people out there :)

Let me know if you need a hand!

Absolutely, I have been thinking about a site redesign for the new year. This can be part of it - making it bilingual will definitely make it more accessible.

Thank you for the offer. Will let you know once I get moving on the redesign.

Ok. If you can figure out a way to parse the information that is currently on the site into a mySQL database the entire site can be make to run with PHP and could become a more dynamic environment with people running searches to get info on people rather than navigating to specific pages. From a static standpoint the current site is very very fast because it is NOT graphics intensive. I want to keep that speed and functionality where even third generation browsers can use the site without any trouble. I am running this site on an Apache server with PHP 4 (obviously or this message center wouldn't be working) and mySQL available but not being used at the moment other than with the Phorum.

Let me know if you have any thoughts on it. I want to keep everything open source and I do not have chilisoft installed so ASP is definitely out of the question.

Take care

mmmm... do you keep some info on a different server... a protected one? As for email... personal information etc...? You might want to put some directed on that server, some on the net. Don't know if thats what you where meaning. Php could be doing everything you want without having to use asp, althought I hear its pretty good.

Here is a site where you can go on the forum and ask questions to lots of webdesigners, I go there alot for help. Mind you there is some tention sometimes but the guys are usually very helpfull. http://www.hottshott.com. The site is made for webmasters.... sometimes I wonder if some of them were born coding... crazy lol. There is also www.coolhomepages.com.... but I would try the other one first.

I'll see if I can find out something for you!

Cheers,
MJ
