 RVR closure
Author: Laura Derry (---.sympatico.ca)

Does everyone know the mess that's going on at RVR these days??

They are closing the school in January and transferring the students to a temporary building in Longueuil (which supposedly used to be a radio station??). They will have to be bused to another location for Gym and who knows where the graduating class will be graduating out of. Then in the new school year they will be going to MacDonald Cartier (hopefully)???

All this so they can do renovations for the new school board which has bought the building.

I don't know all the details but I think this is ridiculous how can they do this to these poor students?

I don't know if you heard but the students had a "WALK OUT" a few weeks ago. They seem to be pretty upset about this and I am taking it to heart myself. If I was a parent to one of these kids my voice would be heard (knowing that it wouldn't help but I'd still raise a stink). I believe the parents have tried to put a stop to it and tried to have their kids finish the school year at RVR but have not succeeded.

I feel for all you guys at RVR. Good luck.

Laura

Laura,

As an employee & parent at RVR, and a member of the Governing Board, I would like to respond to your posting regarding RVR's closure, yes, we are moving to a temporary facility in Longueuil, and yes, we will have to bus the kids to Lemoyne d'Ibreville for gym, unfortunately, we have no choice. The building is actually a school, it is owned by Marie Victorin School Board, and as with most school boards, they keep one school empty, to be used when there is a problem in another school in that board, they have kindly agreed to let us use it from January to June. Our graduation ceremony will most probably be at Champlain, this is not a 100% fact, but it looks that way.

For your information, Riverside School Board (our board/the English Board) does not own RVR, we lost it when Linguistic School Boards came into effect in, I believe 1998. Since then, we have rented 550 student spaces in the building. Macdonald Cartier is co-owned by both our board and the French board. Our Board and the Council of Commissioners, agreed to an exchange of buildings, with the outcome being that Riverside would then own the Macdonald Cartier building.

We have to move out because there are major renovations, or I should say demolition being done in order to make the school ready for the International School kids to come in September 2003. We have been fighting, we've done everything humanly possible but to no avail. When we asked for $12,000,000.00 to build a new school in the West End (Candiac, Delson or somewhere like that) we were refused but the same Government can give $10,000,000.00 to the French Board to basically
re-build RVR. I could go on, but you get the picture. When we merge with Cartier, we will form a new school, new name, new colours etc. It will be a mega-school, are we happy? NO, but we have to make the best of a bad situation, and make it as easy a transition as possible the kids.

Regarding the walk-out, it was wonderful!!! The kids did it all on their own, called the media and held a peaceful walk out. Unfortunately, to no avail, but they got their point across. Our students are truly amazing! The bottom line though, is money, and politics, and as you know, we can't fight that.

Keep your eyes on this site, we will be announcing a huge bash, very soon, I'm just waiting for the final go ahead, rest assured, it will be big. We want everyone who ever went to RVR to show up. It'll be a bring your own booze party, we'll auction off memorabilia, and we're only asking for a small donation of $5.00 per person, which will help defray the cost of the band, which will be EARTHQUAKE, with alumni Paul Gagné. You can also call me at RVR for informaiton anytime.

That's it for now, I just wanted to give you a clearer picture of what's been happening at RVR for the past year.

Thanks Kasey - doesn't every bad situation come down to the ol' mighty dollar?

I wish all the students the best. And I can't wait to hear about the bash.

Its trylly very sad... I have so much memories from RVR. Being educated in a english and french school was the best experience ever... its realy desapointing to see this all come to an end. But I will definetly go to the bash... I can't wait to see everyone :-)

To bad the Goverment can't see how many people where touched by the people working at that school and all the memories we all have. But yet... money rules them... what can we do right!! And good going to all the students that protested it... we are all very proud of you :-)

Yes indeed sad. And I'm so tired of hearing that we can't fight city hall, can't fight the government. If people strongly and I mean strongly believe, then you never know... miracles can happen. I can throw my hands up in the air and say, "Ah, had I known about this long before the walk-out (bravo to those kids!), I would have been there beside them, standing strong and letting the government know exactly what this closures is doing not only to former students but to the future disruption of a system that works".

But I digress... it seems that it is too late now... all we can do is party the good memories out.

I see in the 16 years since I left the province of Quebec little has changed in the way of politics. In the six years that I attended it was often talked about in the hallways and the cafe. weather or not the school would last into the next century. Sadly the end is near for the school, but the spirit of its past and present student body will remain strong. I plan on attending this planned "bash", and catching up with some old friends. I hope that the word gets out early enough so that the turnout is a strong one. As for my spirit and memories, politics will never be able to take that from me.

Keep us up to speed on this one.

With one child already at RVR and another that was supposed to go, this is really sad and frustrating.... I heard RVR was being turned into a French school for adult education, but in Kasey Kartweirght's mail, she says it will be an International school. Which is it ? Will they still have the International side at MacDonald Cartier ? My son wanted to go on that side next year. I've heard good things about MC's International side, but not on the other side. This scares me a little. Please put my mind at ease, if possible.
Please do let me know about that bash, I'm still in contact with old RVR students and I'm sure they would be glad to send their support.

Marie-Claude - RVR is merging with MC. The International School is part of the French school board and they are moving in the RVR building once the renovations are done. The English and French School Boards have been sharing MC. With a child already at RVR, I am surprised that you are not more informed as flyers have been sent home and there have been several meetings.

Been married for 12 years now, and we finally bought a house last year in Longueuil. It would be great to see some buddies from '83. Can you believe that it's 20 years next June???!!!!! YEEK.....how time flies!! Keep in touch, and I hope that all is well!!

Uhm, hang on... did I just fall asleep in left field with respect to the last three postings? I thought it was about the RVR closure ! I realize that I've been doing 80 hour weeks in the past two weeks, but I thought this was to discuss the closure and not who's been married for X years and bought a house (blah, blah, blah). Sorry, guess exhaustion has set in but I also guessed that something new was up too.

Also, this one is for Marie-Claude... I must say that I agree with Darlene G. I have no children at the school (actually I have no children) and I feel more informed on what's going on with RVR than you. I'm sitting here typing this and I'm dumbfounded at your lack of knowledge on this matter. Especially since you've had info sent to you (flyers don't necessarily mean junk mail). I just don't get it ... how people ignore to be informed.

But again, I digress. Have a good day!

Dear AnneMarie:
Keep in mind that this is a Phorum for Discussions. If people are responding to your postings, this is a good thing. Some of the information passed on might be discussed with others that we might all run into at one time or another. In the past few weeks, I have run into old classmates, and the main topic has been the news of RVR closing down. So, just because we might not discuss it here, trust me, it's being discussed at work, home and within the families.

In response to Annemarie and Darlene,

Yes, I've been getting the information through my daughter, if she didn't forget to give me them (having to come to my place, then her father's, maybe things go lost). I have recently separated and the kids and myself have other things on our minds also. The way you guys talk about me is as if I didn't care to inform myself on the subject..... I was only responding to what was written about the international side.... I have not seen any papers on any changes for the MC school.... So, I am sorry if I'm an ignorant mother who seems not to care about getting info and what is going on... I can only do so much right now.......... One thing is for sure, I am not happy with my kids having to go to MC.

thx

Well said Marie-Claude!!!!! Glad to see that there's a parent out there who puts her children before anything else. Even though my kids don't (and unfortunatley) won't be going to RVR, it bothers me to know that RVR is closing down. My best memories are the ones that I spent growing up there. Seems that I spent more time at RVR than I did at home!! I was never a fan of MC and I never will be. If I have to send my kids to MC, trust me....I'll be looking into alternative schooling for them. As for Darlene and AnneMarie's comments: They do have some good points,(except for the one where AM is b*tching about my house and kids.....but I already posted my message about that!!! :>) no hard feelings AM) but AM should be very senstive about how she goes about addressing people in this Phorum. Nobody is out to attack others, especially those with kids in RVR. So come on all: Let's all put our heads together to try and get everybody together to organize "The Bash of Bashes". If RVR closes, then let's make sure that it closes in style!!

Thank you Tania. My message to Marie-Claude was not to say that she was an ignorant mother and I never meant it to hit a cord. I have been to several meetings in the past year about all this and that is why I am informed about this as well as receiving flyers. I stopped going to the meetings around the end of September as they never got anywhere. If you read my other message in this Phorum regarding the injunction which was a total surprise to me until my son came home and told me then a friend told me.

Marie- Claude take it one day at a time. I know I had to, it is hard but somehow we get thru it. I've brought up two boys all by myself for the past 10 years. My oldest graduated last June. Good luck!

As I sit here and read these postings, one thing keeps coming to mind and I must as a parent, state my case but I also must be careful because I am also an employee of RVR & Riverside School Board. I too am a single mother and therefore must remember that these people are my bread and butter. That being said, first and foremost, to all of you concerned, your children will not be going to Macdonald Cartier, we (the Steering Committee formed to work on the merger, of which I am a part) will do everything in our power to make sure that your children (and mine) move into a new school. Yes it will be the Macdonald Cartier building, and that will not change, but trust me on this, the RVR side of the Steering Committee is working very hard to make sure that a new school is formed. We meet every two weeks, and everyone's main focus is the transition and making it as easy as possible for the kids. I went to Macdonald Cartier and believe me, it is not the same place as it was back then, it is a very good school. And we must also remember, they are losing out too, they probably don't want to merge either. Macdonald Cartier will not exist either. So the Provincial Government will have succeeded messing up 2 English Schools.

We have been going through this since December 7th of last year, in 4 days it will be a year, and not a week has gone by since that date, where we haven't been at a meeting regarding this merge and quite frankly, I for one, just want it to end. I understand, as a parent, that people aren't happy, neither am I, as a parent or an employee because I will most probably lose my job with the merger.

As for the bash, that is on hold for the time being, but rest assured, there will be a bash, maybe not this year, and most probably not at RVR but there will indeed be a bash. As I've explained to Laura in private e-mails and to Darlene (who is one of my closest friends), there is an injunction looming whereby some very well meaning, uninformed people, some parents and some not, are trying to stop the move. With the injunction hanging over our heads, it really is hard to plan a bash. But rest assured, as soon as we know what is going on, a bash will be planned. Before anyone jumps all over me saying that it must be at the school, I understand that but, in the long run, we want to celebrate the spirit of the school, and we can do that pretty much anywhere. So there will be a party, it will be big and it will be fun, we just don't know where or when right now.

For those of you who live in the area, you are all encouraged to come and join us in song and celebration on December 11th at 7:00 p.m. We are having a Christmas Concert/Sing-a-long featuring students and staff or RVR, having fun and probably making fools of ourselves. If you want to come, call me at school at 450-467-3318. The tickets are $5.00 per adult or $7.00 a family, no matter how many people are in your family.

Anyhow, hope this clears some things up.

Hi Kasey:
Thank you for keeping everybody up-to-date on what's going on. I for one, really appreciate you taking the time to post your message. You seem to be "on the ball", and I really hope that you don't loose your job. I can understand how the bash is not a priority at this time. I think that we're all blowing off a bit of steam, but a HUGE Bar-B-Q would be fun on RVR's school grounds!!! (Just trying to lighten the mood up!!! :>) )

Where is the Christmas Concert/Sing-A-Long being held? If I can free up my schedule, I wouldn't mind going.

Take care

Tania

Hi Tania,

Thank you for the kind words, I'll make this brief, I just got home from yet another meeting regarding the merger and I'm exhausted.

The concert is at RVR in the Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11th. Tickets will be available at the door. It would be great if you and other alumni could attend. If you do, please make sure you stop by and introduce yourself to me, you won't be able to miss me, I'll be up on stage making a fool of myself. LOL

An RVR BBQ!!!!! Sounds interesting, we'll have to see.

Anyhow, I'll do my best to keep you posted.

Kasey

Thank you very much Kasey, for all of the info. That's exactly what I was looking for by writing in this forum. Good luck to you in the future. Having been through 2 mergers, I know how scary it can be. Thank you for being the voice of parents who can't make it to the meetings. I see that our kids are being taken care of in the best way possible, to make this transition as easy as possible for them.

See you all at the bash :-)

PS If it would be possible for anyone to post information on this forum, when new things come up. I'm certain it would help out some parents. Doesn't have to be ten pages, just the main topics. Thanks

Marie-Claude,

I'll continue to post information as I receive it. As of today, there is nothing else to report other than the fact that people are receiving false information from certain supposedly 'in the know' parents. This information for the most part is untrue, filled with half truths if not total outright lies.

If any of you or anyone else has any questions, please feel free to ask me, I'll be happy to furnish you with the truth.

To Tan and Marie-Claude,

I apologize if my words were taken out of context, but what I had meant was that this was the RVR Closure phorum and not a chit-chat area (I was looking for a fellow friend and started a new phorum) ... that's all. I can emphasize on how heartbreaking a separation is (I lived through it with my parents) and what the future lies ahead seems difficult right now, but with the strength of your family and friends you'll be surprised how this hurt can be transformed into something wonderful down the road.

I just felt that we had gotten of the path regarding the closure in the last postings. What I wrote was in no way meant to be taken as a criticism. And now thanks to Kasey, we are back on track and informed even more.

I've expressed my feelings in "Yesterday's Headlines" (no I didn't lay into anyone ...) and remember this is how I feel. Should you want to express yours, please feel free to do so.

Last year we held a dance at the Otterburn Boating Club and alot of x RVR's where there, people traveled from Toronto, Ottawa etc. It was fun right Laura? Hope to see more of you turn out again this year Eric remember me? If anyone wants tickets please call 450-446-7068 or email me.

Hi!

Sad to hear that RVR is no longer....well you know. I am from the Class of 81 and have many fond memories.

If ever a huge bash is organized for everyone who has attended RVR, please let me know in advance so I can buy a plane ticket....I live in Belgium now. I would love to see the old gang, the teachers. I went to the reunion in May 2001 and hope to relive that experience one day.

Take care!
