Mary  Ellen Coughlin
  • b. 22 August 1888, Kilteely Co. Clare, Ireland. Daughter of Thomas Coughlin and Maria Kennedy. Mother died in childbirth, and Mary Ellen raised by her father's sister Ellen who was married Garrett Fleming.
  • arrived Australia 1912 and taught in schools in the Ballarat area until her marriage.

Initially the couple settled at the farm at Powlett Plain, before moving to Inglewood when that property was lost to the Banks. John worked as a farm labourer in the district before the family moved to Kaniva, and then to their dairy farm at Mead in about 1929.

They had 6 children, Maureen, Geraldine, D., Tony, P. & E.
